Director Joseph Kosinski, known for the upcoming movie F1, has shared an exciting idea for a potential sequel. In an interview with GQ Magazine UK, Kosinski revealed he wants to bring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise back together on screen in a unique crossover between F1 and the classic racing film Days of Thunder.

Kosinski has previously worked with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick, and the two are currently working on a third Top Gun film. Now, Kosinski imagines Cruise returning as his Days of Thunder character, Cole Trickle, facing off against Brad Pitt’s new F1 racer, Sonny Hayes.

Kosinski explained, “Well, right now, it’d be Cole Trickle, who was [Cruise’s] ‘Days of Thunder’ character, we find out that he and [Brad Pitt’s] Sonny Hayes have a past. They were rivals at some point, maybe crossed paths… I heard about this epic go-kart battle on ‘Interview With a Vampire’ that Brad and Tom had, and who wouldn’t pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?”

This idea isn’t new for Kosinski. He once wanted to cast both actors in a version of Ford v Ferrari where they would do their own racing scenes. However, the studio rejected the budget for the plan, and the project moved forward without them, directed by James Mangold with Christian Bale and Matt Damon instead.

Kosinski said, “Yeah, I got close with that. But yeah, you know, everything worked out for the best. I got to do ‘F1.’ But anything’s possible.”

Though Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise haven’t starred together since 1994’s Interview With the Vampire, they remain friends. Pitt even attended the London premiere of F1, where they took photos together. Recently, Pitt joked with E! News about working with Cruise again but admitted he isn’t keen on doing Cruise’s risky stunts, saying, “I’m not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and shit like that.”

Tom Cruise also spoke about a possible Days of Thunder sequel during a May interview on Today Show Australia, saying, “We’re thinking and talking about what could we do and what’s possible.”

On the Top Gun front, Kosinski shared with GQ that the next movie will explore deeper themes. He said, “It’s a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it’s much bigger than himself. There’s still more story to tell for him. There’s one last ride. So we’re working on it now… we’ll only do it if we feel like we’ve got a strong enough story.”

From what Kosinski says, big things are coming in the world of racing and aviation movies. Fans could soon see two of Hollywood’s biggest stars racing head-to-head, and a fresh chapter for Maverick on the horizon.
