In early 2025, news broke that Warner Bros. was working on a sequel to the classic film The Goonies. According to Deadline, the studio was waiting on a story treatment from writer Chris Columbus, who was also busy with a script for a third Gremlins movie. Even though there was a lot of talk, Warner Bros. hadn’t officially confirmed any plans for a sequel at that time.

The excitement grew in February 2025 when some of the original Goonies cast reunited with Chris Columbus to celebrate Ke Huy Quan receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. During the event, fans and reporters asked if a sequel was really happening. Quan said, “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.”

Corey Feldman also responded, sharing hope for the project by saying, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die… There’s hope.”

Then, on February 14, 2025, it was officially announced that The Goonies 2 was in development. Potsy Ponciroli was named as the scriptwriter, with Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario producing through Amblin Entertainment, alongside Chris Columbus. Lauren Shuler Donner was set to executive produce the film.

Josh Brolin, who originally played Brand Walsh, the older brother protecting his siblings, was asked about coming back for The Goonies 2 during an interview with io9 to promote his new film Weapons, Brolin didn’t seem completely sure about it.

He admitted, “I would [have trepidations],” when thinking about returning to his old role.

Brolin’s hesitation comes from his love for the original movie. He worries that making a sequel might take away from what made the 1985 film special. He also questioned the idea of a reboot with a new cast of kids, feeling it might damage the original’s legacy.

“Because I love The Goonies, [but] it’s been 41 years. Let it lay. I mean, no, I love the idea, but I don’t know. If they made one with different kids, then it becomes a different thing, and I think it taints the original one,” Brolin explained.

He continued to say that while the cast members are excited to work together again because of their shared experience, he isn’t sure if the sequel should happen.

“I think people get excited, and people who were in the original movie, they get excited about being able to work with that group again because it was such an amazing experience. So do I think it should be done? I don’t know, man. I love it just standing like it does.”

This insight from Brolin shows a real respect for the original film and the impact it still has on fans, even after more than four decades. The Goonies 2 is moving forward, but whether it will capture the same magic remains to be seen.
