Josh Hartnett (48) Suits Up in Sharp Style at the ‘Verity’ Premiere as the Jeremy Crawford Debate Heats Up

For years, Josh Hartnett’s most prominent image was that of a Hollywood heartthrob, thanks to roles in ‘The Virgin Suicides’ and ‘Pearl Harbor’. He landed on People’s “World’s Most Beautiful” list and dated some of the biggest names in town. Then his career took a different turn.

In the past couple of years, Hartnett, 48, has earned rave reviews for small but pivotal roles in FX’s ‘The Bear’ and the Oscar-winning ‘Oppenheimer’. He also played a serial killer in ‘Trap’ in 2024 and appeared in an episode of ‘Black Mirror’. Each role has pushed the narrative of a career renaissance a little further.

That buildup made the Josh Hartnett ‘Verity‘ premiere appearance in New York feel like a milestone. He walked the carpet at AMC Lincoln Square 13 on September 29 alongside Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson for the screening of the Colleen Hoover adaptation.

Hartnett wore a dark, subtly checked double-breasted suit over a pinstriped shirt with an open collar. He completed the look with a watch, and in the photo shared by Variety he stands with his hands clasped and a relaxed, confident expression.

The tonal suit felt polished without being fussy. The understated choice stood out against the premiere’s bold red backdrop with its oversized white ‘Verity’ lettering. His wife, actor Tamsin Egerton, joined him on the carpet.

The New York event followed the UK gala screening on September 24 at Curzon Mayfair in London. There, Hartnett wore a black suit and posed with Johnson, while Egerton joined him and the couple kissed and cuddled for photographers.

Hathaway skipped the London event and did press in New York that day. The New York premiere brought the three leads together on the same carpet.

In the film, Hartnett plays Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, played by Hathaway. Johnson plays Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer who moves into the Crawford home to ghostwrite for Verity and finds herself pulled into a web of disturbing confessions about Jeremy.

Jeremy is a character readers still argue about, and Hartnett’s version is sure to spark debate among longtime fans. One analysis argues that his casting turns Jeremy into a suspect rather than a crush, since the audience’s assumptions are on trial before he says a line. Hartnett said even his 12-year-old goddaughter, who loves the book, was not on board with him playing Jeremy.

For Hartnett, working with Hathaway was a personal goal. Early set photos from New York City showed the on-screen couple running hand in hand through the streets, and shots of him with a blood-splattered Johnson in March 2025 picked up serious steam online.

Hartnett lives in England with Egerton and their 4 children, on what he describes as a tiny farm with a lot of animals in Hampshire. He has said it takes a good script to get him to leave, and that ‘Verity’ intrigued him.

He has also said that family life keeps him grounded, joking that he is a foreigner in his own home since his wife and kids are all English.

Just 6 days after ‘Verity’ opens, Hartnett leads the Netflix series ‘Below’ on October 8, set in a Newfoundland fishing town. He has said the two projects are very different, and that he has always tried to show his range even if he was not given as many chances when he was younger.

‘Verity’ arrives in US theaters on Friday, October 2, directed by Michael Showalter from a script by Nick Antosca.

Online reaction to the premiere look has been warm. Many fans called the sharp suit perfect on him and loved the polished but relaxed feel.

Others said they prefer his more casual style, while some said they are more interested in seeing his take on Jeremy Crawford than in the red carpet.
