The first trailer for Last Days has been released, offering a glimpse at Justin Lin’s latest film.

The drama tells the real-life story of John Allen Chau, a missionary who lost his life after trying to reach the Sentinelese, a group of people living in isolation on North Sentinel Island.

The movie was directed by Justin Lin, best known for his work on the Fast & Furious series. The script comes from Ben Ripley, who based it on Alex Perry’s article The Last Days of John Allen Chau, originally published in Outside magazine in 2019.

Sky Yang plays Chau in the film. The cast also includes Radhika Apte, Naveen Andrews, Ken Leung, Toby Wallace, Ciara Bravo, Claire Price, Dieudonné Ngabo, and Marny Kennedy, among others. Filming started in Thailand in May 2024.

Last Days had its first showing at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28. It will officially open in theaters in the United States on October 24.

Reception so far has been mixed. Rotten Tomatoes lists only 28 percent of critics giving it a positive review, while Metacritic has the film at 40 out of 100, describing the feedback as average.

The story of Chau has been controversial since it happened. Some people viewed his actions as brave and faithful, while others called them reckless and dangerous for both him and the tribe.

The movie seems ready to revisit that debate, showing his determination and the risks that came with his mission.

This film is likely to stir strong reactions because of the sensitive subject it covers. Whether audiences see it as a story of belief or a cautionary tale, it’s a movie that will get people talking. What do you think about Justin Lin taking on this subject? Share your thoughts in the comments.
