Kat Dennings recently shared the story of her date with Drake while appearing on Chelsea Handler’s show, giving fans a behind-the-scenes look at what it was really like.

The actress described the dinner as feeling less like a casual outing and more like a highly coordinated operation. We had sushi, she said, but were constantly being followed by a black SUV with his security. Dennings admitted that the amount of protection was a lot to take in, adding, it was overwhelming the amount of security.

Dennings has talked about her history with Drake before. In 2013, she explained to the public how the connection began when she was about 19 and working on an independent film in Toronto. Hey, listen: Let’s get this right for one second, she said at the time, describing how the attention started with a tweet from Drake.

What happened was, and I’m glad we’re talking about this, Drake was super nice and said something on Twitter about me, she recalled. Dennings didn’t notice the post right away, but when she got home, she found her social media had exploded. When I got home, I had, like, 50,000 new followers out of nowhere, she said.

The surge wasn’t all positive, as many fans reacted aggressively to the news of her dating the rapper. They were like, ‘F*** you, Kat Dennings’ and ‘You can’t take Drake from me. He’s mine,’ she remembered. Despite the online chaos, Dennings said the personal interaction with Drake was entirely positive. And then I realized what had happened, and then we started talking and he’s super, super nice. He’s a lovely person. He’s a nice man, she added.

While her stories about past dates entertain fans, Dennings has been focused on her acting career. She currently stars as Riley Parker in the ABC sitcom Shifting Gears, which premiered in early 2025 and has already been renewed for a second season. In the show, her character moves back in with her widowed father, played by Tim Allen. According to reports, the series has been a hit for ABC and streaming platforms like Hulu and Disney+.

Dennings’ past work is also finding new life. Her former hit show 2 Broke Girls has surged back into the top ten on Netflix, and she has talked about possibly rebooting the series to give fans a proper ending. She continues to voice her Marvel character Darcy Lewis in Disney+’s animated series What If…?
