Kate Winslet Heads to Middle-earth for Andy Serkis’ ‘The Hunt for Gollum’
Kate Winslet is reportedly stepping into the world of Middle-earth for the upcoming film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. According to Deadline, the Oscar-winning actress has been cast in what sources describe as the main female role in the project. Details about her character have not yet been revealed.
The new movie will be directed by Andy Serkis, who is also returning to play Gollum. Reports say Serkis and filmmaker Peter Jackson spent much of the past year trying to bring Winslet into the film. The role will require the actress to relocate to New Zealand for several months while production takes place. Filming is expected to run from late May until October.
New Zealand is not new territory for Winslet. She previously worked there on Peter Jackson’s 1994 film Heavenly Creatures early in her career. Now she will return for a much larger project connected to the Lord of the Rings universe.
The movie will also bring back several actors from the original trilogy. Elijah Wood is expected to return as Frodo Baggins, while Ian McKellen will again play Gandalf. Serkis will reprise his iconic performance as Gollum. These characters first appeared together in the 2001 film The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and later in the rest of the trilogy and The Hobbit films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s stories.
The story of The Hunt for Gollum focuses on Aragorn’s dangerous mission to find Gollum before the creature can reveal the location of the One Ring to Sauron. The events take place between the timeline of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring. Parts of the story are based on smaller details found in Tolkien’s notes.
The film is being produced by Warner Bros. The script has been written by Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou. Peter Jackson is producing the film along with Boyens, Walsh, and Zane Weiner. Pre-production has already started, with Serkis working between Los Angeles and New Zealand as the team prepares to begin filming in May.
Winslet had previously hinted that she would be leaving the United Kingdom for several months this year, but she did not explain why at the time. Deadline later confirmed that the trip was connected to her involvement in The Hunt for Gollum.
The actress may also return to television in the future. During an interview about her directorial project Goodbye June, Winslet said there is a “strong likelihood” that she could appear in a second season of the HBO series Mare of Easttown. She explained that she has already had what she described as “proper conversations” with the show’s creator Brad Ingelsby and director Craig Zobel. If the project moves forward, filming could take place in Pennsylvania in 2027.
Bringing Kate Winslet into the Lord of the Rings world is a big move that could attract both longtime fans and new viewers. She is a respected actress with a strong track record, and her presence will likely add something fresh to the story. The return of familiar characters also makes the project even more exciting.
