Reeves recently gave fans a promising update about the long-awaited sequel to his 2005 supernatural thriller, revealing that progress is being made behind the scenes.

In a new interview with Fandango, Reeves shared that the team has just received a fresh version of the script. “Fingers crossed. Another draft of the script came in. We’re gonna take it to the studio and hopefully they like it too,” he said.

The actor’s comment marks one of the most positive updates in recent years, giving fans renewed optimism that John Constantine’s story is closer than ever to returning to the big screen.

Talk of a sequel to Constantine has been ongoing for more than a decade. Director Francis Lawrence, who helmed the original film, has been attached to return, along with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman. Warner Bros. confirmed in 2022 that the sequel was officially in development, with J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella also joining as producers.

The film will reportedly exist within DC’s “Elseworlds” line, separate from the main DC Universe, allowing it to continue the tone and world of the 2005 movie.

Reeves has long expressed his desire to revisit the role of the chain-smoking exorcist and occult detective.

He even mentioned in early 2025 that he and Lawrence had finally developed a story they both believed in and received DC Studios’ approval to proceed with the script. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura later confirmed that the screenplay was finished by late 2024, but revisions and studio discussions have continued since then.

While fans have waited patiently, not everything has gone smoothly. Peter Stormare, who portrayed Lucifer in the first film, revealed earlier this year that Reeves had been unhappy with some of the early script versions.

According to Stormare, the studio wanted to push the sequel toward bigger action scenes, while Reeves wanted to preserve the film’s darker and more spiritual tone. “Keanu says, ‘I’ve done John Wick. This movie is spiritual. It’s about demons and regular people. And I wanted to keep it that way,’” Stormare said, noting that both he and Reeves hope to capture the same eerie atmosphere that made the first film a cult favorite.

Despite the ups and downs, both Reeves and Lawrence seem determined to bring Constantine 2 to life. With another draft now ready for review, fans can finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.
