Keanu Reeves in Talks to Star in Universal’s New LEGO Movie Adventure – Here’s What We Know
Keanu Reeves may soon be stepping into the world of LEGO. The actor is reportedly in talks to star in a new live-action hybrid LEGO movie being developed by Universal, according to TheWrap.
The upcoming project is still untitled, and many details about the story are being kept secret. However, reports say the movie will combine live-action scenes with animation, creating a style similar to previous LEGO films that mixed real-world characters with the colorful LEGO universe.
Josh Cooley is attached to direct the film. Cooley is known for his work in animation, including directing Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” which won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. His involvement suggests the new LEGO project could focus heavily on both humor and visual creativity.
The film is expected to be produced by Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians through The LEGO Group. While Universal has not shared official comments about the project, TheWrap reported that the movie is part of a bigger partnership between Universal and the LEGO company.
The agreement between the two companies was announced as a plan to create three new live-action LEGO movies. The upcoming Keanu Reeves project is believed to be one of those films, though the other two projects have not yet been revealed.
The new movie arrives years after the success of “The LEGO Movie,” which helped turn the toy brand into a major film franchise. Released in 2014 by Warner Bros., the animated comedy became a surprise hit with both audiences and critics. The film earned around $468 million worldwide and was praised for its creative storytelling, humor, and ability to appeal to both children and adults.
Following that success, Warner Bros. and The LEGO Group released several more movies, including “The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part,” “The LEGO Batman Movie,” and “The LEGO Ninjago Movie.” Each project explored a different part of the LEGO world while keeping the playful style that made the original film popular.
Universal is now looking to continue that legacy with a new approach. Instead of a fully animated movie, the studio is moving forward with a hybrid format that could allow LEGO characters and real actors to share the screen.
For Keanu Reeves, the role would mark another interesting addition to his wide-ranging career. The actor has become known for taking on very different projects, from the action-packed “John Wick” franchise to voice roles like Duke Caboom in “Toy Story 4.” His connection with audiences and reputation as a fan-favorite star could bring extra attention to the LEGO film.
Universal’s Matt Reilly, executive vice president of Production Development, and Jacqueline Garell, director of Production Development, are expected to oversee the project for the studio.
Although fans will have to wait for more details about the story and Reeves’ possible character, the combination of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors with one of the world’s most recognizable toy brands has already created plenty of excitement. The new LEGO movie could become another major step in expanding the franchise for a new generation of viewers.
