Keira Knightley is taking a firm stand on social media at home to protect her children. The actress spoke to BBC Radio 4 this week about her worries over her daughters, Edie, 10, and Delilah, 6, using social media and spending too much time on screens.

“I find it very terrifying because they’re unregulated spaces,” Knightley said in a video shared by BBC on Wednesday, Oct. 23.

“And I think for children, unregulated spaces are ones I want to protect them from.” She added that her daughters are not allowed on devices without supervision, saying, “So in our house, we’ve got a no social media thing. They’re not allowed on devices if we can’t see what they’re looking at…”

Knightley, who is married to musician James Righton, admitted she isn’t sure if the rules are permanent or how long she can maintain them given how common technology is today.

When asked about how her children might handle peer pressure from friends using social media, Knightley explained that their school supports a social media-free approach, which has helped.

“We’re at one of the schools that is doing that ‘social media-free’ childhood where the parents mostly all do the same thing,” she said. “So I think most of the parents at the school, there was a big push and I think most of us are in agreement that that’s the way forward that we want to go. But obviously not everybody, because it is an issue that divides a lot of people.”

She also noted that household rules vary widely because parents take different approaches to social media. “I would love it if some regulation came in so it wasn’t all put on the parents,” Knightley said.

Knightley’s approach shows the challenges parents face in managing screen time and online safety in today’s digital world. What do you think about her rules? Would you consider banning social media at home for your kids? Share your thoughts in the comments.
