Kevin Feige on Reuniting the Original X-Men in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: “We’re Really Delving Into It”
Marvel fans have been waiting a long time to see the X-Men fully return to the big screen. And now, it’s finally happening. In a recent interview with Marvel.com, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige opened up about what it means to bring the original X-Men back for Avengers: Doomsday, and why it’s such a personal moment for him.
Feige first worked on the X-Men movies back in the early 2000s, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe even existed. Now, more than two decades later, he’s leading the charge to bring those same characters into the world he helped build.
Talking about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, Feige shared his excitement about reuniting the X-Men with other heroes like the Avengers and the Fantastic Four.
“It was another dream that we just didn’t think about for many years,” he said. “Deadpool & Wolverine scratched the surface of that. And now, we’re really delving into it with Doomsday.”
The return of the X-Men became possible after Disney bought 20th Century Fox, giving Marvel Studios the rights to use those characters again. It opened the door for stories that fans had only hoped for until now.
Feige said one of his favorite things about making an Avengers movie is watching different types of heroes interact. In Doomsday, those interactions go even further, with characters from different worlds coming together as the multiverse starts to fall apart.
“The fun of an Avengers movie is introducing people to each other and seeing how very different personalities get along,” Feige explained. In this new film, he said, heroes will be visiting each other’s home bases, and that includes the return of familiar X-Men characters, now sharing the screen with the MCU’s biggest names.
Although Feige didn’t name exactly which X-Men are coming back, it’s clear that this movie will be much bigger than anything we’ve seen before. We also know some names that have been confirmed during a live stream that took place several months ago. Patrick Stewart will return as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Additionally, Kelsey Grammer will reprise his role as Beast with Allan Cumming returning as Nightcrawler.
And for Feige, who helped bring the X-Men to life decades ago, it’s a full-circle moment.
“It’s surreal for me, who’s been around for 25 years,” he added.
His comments came during a longer interview tied to the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the new MCU film introducing Marvel’s First Family. While that movie is its own story set in a retro-futuristic alternate universe, it directly leads into Avengers: Doomsday, where the Fantastic Four will join the fight alongside the Avengers and the X-Men.
The X-Men were once the face of Marvel movies. Now, they’re back, and about to become part of something even bigger. Feige’s excitement says it all. This isn’t just a cameo or a tease. Avengers: Doomsday is where the X-Men return in full force.
