Kevin Feige Says the Baxter Building Will Be Packed in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
The Fantastic Four are finally part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and fans are loving it. The Fantastic Four: First Steps recently hit theaters and is already doing great with both audiences and critics.
The film brings new actors into the MCU: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.
This movie also introduces a lot of new things to the MCU. That includes classic Fantastic Four villains, a 1960s-inspired world, and most importantly, the Baxter Building. And according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, that building is going to be a big deal in the next major crossover movie, Avengers: Doomsday.
Feige recently spoke to Marvel.com about First Steps and how it sets up what’s coming next. One thing he focused on was how the Baxter Building, which was a quiet place in First Steps, won’t stay that way for long.
He said the set was originally designed for just the Fantastic Four team, but it will become a hub for many more characters when Doomsday hits theaters. “Let’s say it had four or five people in it at most in the Fantastic Four movie,” Feige explained. “And it’s got a heck of a lot more people in it in Doomsday.”
He added that it’s exciting to bring all these different heroes together under one roof. “The fun of an Avengers movie is introducing people to each other and seeing how very different personalities get along,” he said. “In the case of a movie that involves the threat of worlds literally colliding, it’s fun to see them visit each other’s homes.”
Feige also talked about what it was like walking onto the Baxter Building set for the first time. It wasn’t just a flashy superhero base. It felt like a real home for Reed and Sue.
“Walking into the Baxter Building for the first time was exciting,” he said. “Particularly Reed and Sue’s living area… It’s a reminder that they are not just Super Heroes. They’re not just astronauts. They’re not just gigantic celebrities. They’re a couple, and they have a bathroom, and they get ready to go to bed at night, which is as human as it gets.”
The design of the building was done by Kasra Farahani, who also worked on Loki. Feige mentioned that the building’s look is inspired by retro-futurism, similar to old World’s Fair ideas about the future being bright and full of hope.
Feige said the sets weren’t just for one film either. They were always meant to carry into the larger MCU. “I love that people are responding to the Baxter Building, the lab, the kitchen, the Fantasticar, the ship,” he said. “Kasra was building those sets not just for Fantastic Four but for the Avengers movie that we’re filming now.”
So while The Fantastic Four: First Steps gave us a taste of the team’s world, Avengers: Doomsday will expand it in a huge way. The Baxter Building isn’t just a cool base anymore. It’s going to be a major meeting point for the Avengers, the X-Men, and Marvel’s First Family.
