Kevin Feige Talks Mephisto’s Long-Awaited MCU Debut and What Comes Next
After years of fans waiting and guessing, Marvel villain Mephisto has finally joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He showed up for the first time in the Disney+ series Ironheart. Actor Sacha Baron Cohen plays the role, bringing a mix of charm and danger as Marvel’s version of the devil.
His appearance came in the final episode of Ironheart, where he seemed to strike some sort of mysterious deal with Riri Williams. Now, fans are busy theorizing where he’ll turn up next and which Marvel hero might cross paths with him.
At a press event for Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige talked about Mephisto’s future. According to Feige, Sacha Baron Cohen’s time as the devil is not over. When asked if Mephisto will appear again, Feige said simply, “yes.”
But he didn’t say where or when. “He was a big part of Thanos’ storyline in the comics. So again, now that he’s here, the potential is clear,” he explained.
Feige also talked about why it took so long to bring Mephisto into the MCU. Before the shared movie universe took shape, Feige admitted he wasn’t sure how a character like Mephisto would fit alongside the superheroes. “He’s the devil; how do you do that character?” he said.
Now that Mephisto is officially part of the MCU, there’s a lot of speculation about where he might show up. One possibility is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which comes out next summer.
In the comics, Mephisto plays a huge role in the famous “One More Day” story. In that storyline, Peter Parker makes a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May’s life. In return, Peter’s marriage to Mary Jane gets erased from history, and his secret identity is restored. Marvel fans think this could be a perfect chance for Cohen’s Mephisto to return.
There’s also talk of Mephisto showing up in Avengers: Doomsday, which is set for 2026. In the comics, Mephisto has a history with Doctor Doom’s family. Doom’s mother, Cynthia, once made a deal with Mephisto for magical power, which led to tragic results. Doom later worked with Doctor Strange to try and save her soul from Mephisto’s realm.
Whether the movie follows this exact story or not, Cohen’s Mephisto could make at least a brief appearance, especially since Doctor Doom is expected to play a big role in that film.
For now, Marvel fans know only one thing for sure: Mephisto is here, and Marvel has plans for him. Just how big those plans are remains a mystery. Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios are keeping their secrets, for now.
