Square Enix has kept ‘Kingdom Hearts 4‘ largely under wraps since first announcing the game back in 2022, offering fans only brief glimpses of Sora’s mysterious new setting, Quadratum, without confirming much else about the story ahead. That silence made this year’s D23 presentation feel especially significant, given how long the fanbase has waited for real substance behind the sequel’s next chapter, following years of speculation about which Disney worlds might eventually appear.

That wait paid off during Disney’s D23 Entertainment Showcase, where a new trailer for ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ revealed its first confirmed Disney world. The game will send Sora into the Land of the Dead from Pixar’s ‘Coco,’ complete with a Día de los Muertos-themed adventure alongside Miguel and his great-great-grandfather Hector.

The roughly 90-second trailer opens by recreating a pivotal scene from the film, showing Hector explaining the concept of the Final Death to Miguel before the story shifts into a Heartless attack during one of Miguel’s performances. Sora, sporting a new Día de Muertos-inspired look complete with skull-style face paint, a heart and crown design on his cheeks, and a marigold-and-bone Keyblade built to match the world’s aesthetic, joins the fight and eventually teams up with both Miguel and Hector in battle.

According to Square Enix, the Coco world will introduce new gameplay features not previously seen in the series, including action-packed sequences that let players control Donald and Goofy directly, along with a separate exploration segment following King Mickey as he searches for clues about Sora’s whereabouts. The trailer also teased darker story beats, including Sora collapsing after experiencing ghostly visions of Donald and Goofy, suggesting his journey through Quadratum and the Coco world may be more closely connected than previous Disney worlds have been to each other in past entries.

Alongside the new footage, Square Enix confirmed ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ is targeting a “late 2027” release window. The game will launch day one across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via both Steam and the Epic Games Store, a notably broader platform rollout than the series has typically received in the past.

That platform spread marks a meaningful shift for a franchise that has spent years bouncing between PlayStation exclusivity and Nintendo handheld spin-offs. The game is also confirmed to be wishlistable now across all of those storefronts, giving fans an early way to track the release ahead of next year’s launch.

The Coco reveal wasn’t the only major Kingdom Hearts announcement to come out of the weekend. Disney also confirmed a new Kingdom Hearts anime series in development for Disney+, one that will reportedly reimagine the franchise’s saga with a fresh story rather than directly adapting the games, sparking early fan speculation about which characters might anchor its narrative.

With the Coco world confirmed, gameplay details beginning to take shape, and an anime adaptation now also in the works, ‘Kingdom Hearts 4’ appears to be entering a much more active phase of its rollout after years of relative quiet. Between the visual design work put into recreating the Land of the Dead and the expanding scope of the franchise as a whole, fans have plenty of reason to stay tuned for further updates as 2027 approaches.
