Kit Connor Says His Cyclops Will Feel “Really Different” – Here’s What the New Scott Summers Has to Say

Marvel’s mutant reboot has generated no shortage of speculation about how faithful this new take on the X-Men will be to what fans already know from decades of comics and Fox’s earlier film franchise. With a cast now officially locked in, attention has quickly shifted from who’s playing these characters to how they actually plan to reimagine them.

Kit Connor’s casting as Cyclops carries particular weight in that conversation, given how closely tied the character has been to Fox’s original trilogy for over two decades. James Marsden’s version of Scott Summers became a defining piece of that earlier franchise, appearing across multiple films and setting a strong visual template for the character that’s stuck with audiences ever since.

Speaking to GMA following D23’s official cast reveal, Connor addressed that legacy directly, framing his own approach as something distinctly separate from what’s come before. “I grew up with the original movies in a lot of ways, and it’s really cool because it also feels like we are doing a really different version, a different take, which is really exciting,” Connor said in the interview.

That comment lines up closely with what director Jake Schreier has said elsewhere about his creative approach to the reboot. Schreier has previously described the project as aiming for “a fresh start” for the franchise, pulling inspiration from decades of X-Men comics rather than defaulting to the tone or visual language established by Fox’s earlier films.

Connor’s path to the role moved quickly once his name entered the rumor mill. Deadline first reported that Marvel had landed on the ‘Heartstopper’ star following a competitive testing process that took place shortly after the July 4th holiday, with Kevin Feige and Schreier meeting a number of candidates before making their final decision.

The 22-year-old actor arrives at Cyclops with a résumé built largely around breakout television and film work. He’s best known for playing Nick Nelson in Netflix’s ‘Heartstopper’, a role he recently closed out in the ‘Heartstopper Forever’ film, alongside earlier credits including the voice of Pantalaimon in HBO’s ‘His Dark Materials’ and a turn as the teenage Elton John in ‘Rocketman’.

More recently, Connor caught the attention of director Alex Garland, who cast him in the A24 war film ‘Warfare’, further building his profile beyond the world of streaming teen dramas. That range appears to have factored into Marvel’s decision to hand him one of the franchise’s most iconic and historically significant roles.

In the comics, Scott Summers holds a foundational place in X-Men history, debuting in 1963’s ‘The X-Men’ #1 as the team’s first member and longtime field captain. His backstory involves growing up in a Nebraska orphanage secretly run by a man named Mr. Milbury, a detail that’s taken on new significance now that Marvel has cast Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury in the same film.

Connor joins a rapidly assembled roster that includes Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue, and Maya Boyd as Storm. The film also marks a generational handoff for Cyclops specifically, with James Marsden reprising his original trilogy version of the character one final time in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ before Connor’s younger take officially takes over.

Director Jake Schreier is set to lead the ensemble when ‘X-Men’ arrives in theaters on May 5, 2028, following the character’s brief but memorable teaser appearance via Sadie Sink’s Jean Grey earlier this summer in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. With Connor now confirmed and speaking openly about the tonal shift ahead, fans have their clearest signal yet about the direction this new era of mutants is heading.
