Kit Harington Explains Why He Jumped at the Chance to Join HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ as Gilderoy Lockhart

HBO’s ‘Harry Potter‘ series has spent the past year assembling one of the most closely scrutinized casts in recent television history, with every new name generating fresh debate among fans comparing this version to the beloved film franchise. The show has already locked in major names like John Lithgow as Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Janet McTeer as McGonagall, and Nick Frost as Hagrid, alongside young leads Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton as Harry, Ron, and Hermione.

That casting process hit a snag earlier this year when Nicholas Hoult, originally set to play Gilderoy Lockhart, dropped out due to scheduling conflicts tied to his other commitments. Rather than delay the character’s introduction, HBO moved quickly to find a replacement for the vain, self-obsessed Defense Against the Dark Arts professor who is set to appear in the show’s second season.

That replacement turned out to be Kit Harington, and according to the actor himself, the decision to sign on required almost no deliberation. Speaking on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Harington described his reaction to learning about the overall project well before he was even offered the role. “When I knew they were doing this show, I was like, I think that’s a brilliant idea, I think they can really delve into it further than the films did,” he said. “I’m fully supportive of it.”

For Harington, joining the role carries an extra layer of familiarity. He previously voiced Lockhart in the Harry Potter audiobook editions, meaning this marks his first time stepping into the character in live-action rather than an entirely new introduction to the role. That prior connection to the character seems to have made the offer feel even more natural once it came together.

His comments also speak to a broader sentiment shared by much of the show’s growing cast, many of whom have pointed to the format itself as the main draw. A multi-season television adaptation gives the creative team far more room to explore each book’s subplots and secondary characters than the original film series could manage within a two-hour runtime, something Harington himself highlighted as part of what excited him about the project.

Season 2’s storyline will center on the events of ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets,’ the book in which Lockhart, a celebrated but largely incompetent wizard author, joins the Hogwarts staff and quickly becomes a fan favorite for his combination of charm and obliviousness. Filming for that season is expected to begin in fall 2026, with co-showrunners Francesca Gardiner and Jon Brown overseeing the next chapter after HBO handed the series an early renewal back in May.

His background on ‘Game of Thrones’ gives him a familiar résumé within HBO’s ecosystem, something that likely made the transition into this particular universe feel like an easy fit for the network as well.
