Kristen Stewart Warns: “Reality Is Breaking Completely Under Trump” and May Leave America
Kristen Stewart is thinking about leaving the U.S. and taking her career to Europe. In an interview with The Times of London, the Oscar-nominated actress said she will probably not stay in America because of the political situation.
Reality is breaking completely under Trump, Stewart said, adding that the current climate makes it hard for her to work freely. But we should take a page out of his book and create the reality we want to live in, she added. When asked directly if she plans to stay in the U.S., she answered firmly, Probably not. I can’t work freely there.
Stewart made it clear that leaving doesn’t mean stepping away from movies. I’d like to make movies in Europe and then shove them down the throat of the American people, she joked.
She isn’t the only celebrity moving abroad. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi recently settled in the Cotswolds, England, citing similar political frustrations. Director James Cameron also chose to stay in New Zealand, telling the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast, I’m not there for scenery, I’m there for the sanity. He praised New Zealand’s social cohesion and approach to science compared with what he called the utter disarray in the U.S.
Stewart’s tensions with President Trump go back years. She told Variety in 2017, He was mad at me a couple years ago, really obsessed with me a couple years ago, which is f**** crazy.
Despite politics, Stewart is riding high professionally. In 2025, she made her feature directing debut with The Chronology of Water, which premiered at Cannes to a six-minute standing ovation. The film stars Imogen Poots as author Lidia Yuknavitch, with Thora Birch and Jim Belushi in supporting roles. Stewart also recently appeared in the romantic thriller Rosebush Pruning alongside Elle Fanning and Josh O’Connor.
Looking ahead, Stewart has expressed interest in directing a Twilight reboot. She told Entertainment Tonight that she would love to revisit the saga from behind the camera. Between her marriage to Dylan Meyer in 2025 and her growing career as a director, Stewart described the past year as the craziest of her life. She is now focusing on making independent films from her new European home.
Fans can expect Stewart to continue tackling bold and challenging stories outside the studio system. Her move marks a big change for a star who has been in the U.S. spotlight since she was a child, and it may inspire other actors to consider working abroad.
