HBO’s Green Lantern series has spent its first two episodes carefully laying groundwork, introducing the mysterious happenings in Rushville while gradually deepening the tension between Hal Jordan and his newer, more guarded partner, John Stewart. That patient pacing has clearly resonated with audiences, given just how much online conversation the show has generated since its premiere.

That momentum continues this week as ‘Lanterns’ Episode 3, titled “OutKast,” arrives on HBO Max, promising to finally dive into John Stewart’s family history and his complicated path toward becoming a Green Lantern. Based on the newly released preview, the episode appears set to explore why Stewart was chosen for this role in the first place, unpacking buried trauma tied directly to his upbringing.
