‘Lanterns’ Episode 4 Recap and Ending Explained: Who Is the Manhunter?
HBO’s ‘Lanterns‘ has spent its first half-season building an atmosphere that feels less like a superhero showcase and more like prestige crime drama, and that patience has been the show’s whole identity so far. The series has been positioned as DC’s take on a “True Detective”-style mystery, with the central question all along being the true identity of the villainous Manhunter. That slow burn has tested some viewers, but it also set the stage for a fourth episode that finally cashes in on its buildup.
Set in the strange, alien-plagued town of Rushville, Nebraska, the show has followed rancher William Macon ordering his men to kill aliens who kept turning up in the city, all while claiming he simply didn’t want other beings invading his planet, even though he was clearly answering to a mysterious benefactor. Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart have spent the season circling that benefactor, convinced Macon’s compound held the answer to who, or what, the Manhunter actually is.
That search finally paid off. Poorna Jagannathan’s Zoe Macon was revealed as the Manhunter in the closing moments of episode 4, a twist that upends nearly everything the show had suggested about who the real threat in Rushville actually is. The reveal came after Hal and John broke into Macon’s compound using a giant drill fashioned from John’s Green Lantern ring, hoping to dig up clues about who was really pulling the strings.
The twist reframes Zoe’s earlier apparent death as another piece of misdirection. If John, Hal, and the alien Antaan believed Zoe was already dead, none of them would have thought to suspect her of being the Manhunter in the first place, even though a man named Hector was expected to take the blame instead. John’s closeness to Zoe appears to be the reason he hasn’t turned her in to Antaan and his group of aggrieved aliens, despite being nearly certain of what she is, which suggests he may suspect Antaan of hiding something darker.
The stakes only escalate from there. Hal and John learn they have just one day to track down the Manhunter before the aliens hiding out in Nebraska detonate a bomb capable of wiping out the entire city, since eliminating the shape-shifter matters that much to them. That ticking clock now hangs over the back half of the season.
Sheriff Kerry Kane, played by Kelly Macdonald, keeps proving herself essential to keeping both Lanterns alive. Before Macon could torture the pair, Kane pulled them off the ranch under the cover of a trespassing charge, purely as a means to save their lives, and she later tells them at their motel that she’s close to breaking into Macon’s files to expose the benefactor’s identity.
Beyond the Manhunter mystery, episode 4 also marks a quieter turning point for John Stewart. The episode was directed by Stephen Williams and written by Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson, and its title reportedly borrows from a Walt Disney design term John explains on-screen, describing a landmark placed to draw the eye and organize everything around it. Handed exactly what the Guardians instructed him to take, John chose not to follow through, a decision that carries more weight than the Manhunter twist itself since the show never draws attention to it with a single line of dialogue.
Not every corner of the fandom is fully on board yet, though. One review argued that halfway through the season, the show still hasn’t given viewers much reason to care, even if ‘Lanterns’ isn’t outright bad and had a handful of genuinely enjoyable moments in episode 4. Still, a warmer beat did land for longtime fans, as John and Hal shared a quiet heart-to-heart in the car afterward, with John half-apologizing for what he’d said and admitting he would have handed the ring back.
With Zoe’s true nature exposed and a countdown now running, ‘Lanterns’ has finally forced its two leads into a corner. Whether Hal and John end up hunting Zoe together, or turn on each other over what to do next, is shaping up to be the question driving the rest of season 1.
