Late ‘Black Panther’ Star Chadwick Boseman’s Family Questioned Opioid Levels Found in His System, Newly Revealed Letters Show

Chadwick Boseman’s death in August 2020 devastated fans around the world, with the ‘Black Panther’ star having kept his four-year battle with colon cancer almost entirely private until his passing at age 43. In the years since, his legacy has continued to grow, from a posthumous Hollywood Walk of Fame star awarded in November 2025 to his widow’s emotional 2024 appearance on the Today show reflecting on the secrecy surrounding his illness.

That public celebration of his life has existed alongside a far more private, and increasingly contentious, dispute behind the scenes. Boseman’s parents and brothers filed a Los Angeles court petition this past July seeking to remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, as administrator of his estate, arguing she had failed to fully distribute assets nearly four years after a 2022 court order.

Now newly surfaced correspondence shows that tension traces back much further than this summer’s lawsuit. According to letters obtained by TMZ, lawyers representing Boseman’s parents and brothers, Leroy, Carolyn, Derrick and Kevin, wrote to Ledward’s legal team on November 16, 2020, just weeks after his death, requesting his medical records and specifically raising questions about the opioid levels detected in his system at the time of his death.

The family’s attorneys asked Ledward’s team to release Boseman’s medical records, preserve data by digitally imaging his phones, computers and other devices, and provide a full accounting of his bank accounts. Their letter reportedly stated that their “only hope is this case is to fulfill Chad’s actual intent and ensure that the distribution of assets aligns with the free will that God gave him.”

A toxicology report cited in coverage of the dispute reportedly found 0.12 milligrams per liter of hydromorphone in Boseman’s system, a level described as four times the highest therapeutic concentration and within the toxic range. The family also requested any recordings Boseman may have made regarding how he wanted his fortune divided, believing he had verbally instructed that 90 percent of his film residuals be split evenly among his parents and two brothers, though no such recording has surfaced publicly.

Ledward’s attorney responded sharply in a letter dated December 1, 2020, calling the family’s correspondence “sudden misguided and aggressive” and stating that it required “an entirely different posture” going forward. A second letter from the family’s lawyers, dated August 23, 2021, reportedly went further, raising direct questions about why Boseman was found on the floor of his bedroom the day he died, and noting that the family had wanted an autopsy performed despite Ledward’s initial reluctance out of concern that his body “had been through enough.”

Boseman died without a will, and under a 2022 court order, half his estate went to Ledward, with a quarter going to each of his parents. That arrangement became the center of this summer’s lawsuit, in which Kevin and Derrick Boseman alleged their sister-in-law maintained “unilateral control” over the estate and had not been transparent about deals involving the company managing his image and legacy.

Ledward has firmly rejected those claims through her attorney, calling the petition a “public-relations stunt” built on “falsehoods under oath” that has caused collateral damage to her late husband’s legacy. Her legal team has maintained that she not only complied with the original court order but went well beyond what was legally required of her, including efforts to include the Boseman family in projects honoring his memory.

The dispute remains before the Los Angeles court, with neither the estate lawsuit nor these newly revealed 2020 letters yet resolved.
