James Gunn’s Superman has turned into a win for Warner Bros., with the film now looking at a net profit of about $125 million from its time in theaters.

As of September 7, 2025, the movie has earned $353 million in the United States and Canada and another $261 million from other countries, which puts its worldwide total at $614 million.

Earlier in June it was said Superman would need to make at least $500 million around the world just to break even at the box office, and closer to $700 million to be seen as a true success. Before the release, THR guessed that the film might open to about $175 million in the U.S. and could go on to earn over $1 billion globally, based on how well the first trailer was received online.

At the same time, they pointed out the heavy costs behind the movie, which included about $400 million for production and marketing.

In the end, the actual opening weekend numbers didn’t quite reach those heights. The film earned about $95 million from international markets during that first weekend, with a worldwide total of $220 million.

The biggest numbers outside North America came from the United Kingdom with $9.8 million, Mexico with $8.8 million, China with $6.6 million, Brazil with $5.9 million, Australia with $5.3 million, France and Korea both with $4.2 million, India with $3.8 million, Spain with $2.9 million, and Japan with $2.5 million. The smaller-than-hoped results overseas were especially noticeable in China, where the movie opened in fourth place.

David A. Gross from FranchiseRe explained this by saying, “Superman has always been identified as a quintessentially American character and story, and in some parts of the world, America is currently not enjoying its greatest popularity.”

Even with a mixed global run, Superman is being counted as a success for Warner Bros., and James Gunn is already moving forward with more stories. In June, Gunn said he had started writing another Superman project.

He explained that it would not be a direct sequel but would still feature the character in a big way. By August, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed that Gunn was indeed writing and directing the next movie in what Gunn called the “Super-Family.” Gunn later revealed he had finished a script treatment and described it as the next step in what he called the “Superman Saga.”

In September, Gunn announced the official title, Man of Tomorrow, and shared that the film was set for release on July 9, 2027. Both David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult are expected to return.

Gunn is also looking at other projects tied to Superman. Reports in July said that he was thinking about spin-off series focused on supporting characters. That included possible shows for Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific and Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen.

Journalist Jeff Sneider reported that Gisondo was lined up to star in a Jimmy Olsen show for HBO Max, which could even bring in the comic book villain Gorilla Grodd to the DC Universe.
