Laurence Fishburne Eyes Role as Professor X in the MCU: βIt Feels Like It Would Be Fit for Me’
Laurence Fishburne recently opened up about his dream of playing Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during an interview with ComicBook, ahead of the upcoming fourth season of The Witcher on Netflix. The actor explained that his interest in the role isnβt just about age, itβs also about his long-time love for Marvel.
βI am a true believer in terms of the Marvel space,β Fishburne said. βWhether itβs Marvel comic books or the MCU. I was reading comic books at the age of six in New York City, and those writers and those artists were talking about things that were happening in the city that I was growing up in.”
“So, of course, there are many characters in the Marvel Universe that I related to that I wished I could have played when I was younger. But Iβm very, very pleased with the way the movies have been cast. Iβm very, very pleased with the way that they have played out. Iβm a huge fan of all of those movies.β
Fishburne also explained why Professor X feels like a natural fit for him at this stage in his career. βProfessor X, at the moment, is, I feel, the most appropriate character for me to play at the age that I am at this point. And for the kind of roles that I am known for. It feels like it would be fit for me. So thatβs why.β
The actor even hinted at a unique idea for his version of the character, referencing the iconic, sharply shaped eyebrows seen in the comics.
When asked about potentially bringing them back, Fishburne laughed and said, βWell, I will speak to them if I am fortunate enough to fulfill this dream. If I am fortunate enough to realize that dream, I will certainly make the request about the eyebrows.β
Professor Charles Xavier has previously been portrayed by Patrick Stewart, who first played the character in 2000βs X-Men, and James McAvoy, who starred in X-Men: First Class and its sequels. Stewart is set to return one last time in Avengers: Doomsday, but the future of the character in the MCU after that is uncertain.
Fishburneβs long-standing connection to Marvel and his enthusiasm for the role make him a compelling choice for fans hoping to see a fresh take on the legendary mutant leader.
