Leaked ‘Mass Effect: Universe’ Trailer Surfaces Just a Day After EA Shuts Down BioWare
For nearly two decades, ‘Mass Effect’ has been one of gaming’s most beloved science fiction sagas, built on unforgettable characters, tough choices and a galaxy that fans still love to revisit. That is why this week’s news has hit the community so hard.
On Wednesday, October 21, Electronic Arts confirmed that it is closing BioWare, the studio behind ‘Mass Effect’ and ‘Dragon Age’, and ending development on the next ‘Mass Effect’ game. BioWare said in a statement that “BioWare is closing and early development on the next Mass Effect project is ending.”
Then, less than a day later, something unexpected appeared. A trailer for the cancelled project, reportedly titled ‘Mass Effect: Universe’, surfaced on the ‘Mass Effect’ subreddit, and it has already racked up an enormous amount of attention across social media.
The video, posted by a burner account claiming to be tied to BioWare, opens with a disclaimer that the footage is in-engine material from a small team using pre-production assets. It runs about two minutes and contains no gameplay, only cinematic scenes.
Those scenes follow a team of apparent spies capturing a target before the action erupts into a bar fight, with a new protagonist in the middle of it. Liara T’Soni appears as an ally, there is a hint of romance, and the trailer ends on the title ‘Mass Effect: Universe’ followed by the words “Coming Soon.”
A BioWare dev on reddit leaked a Mass Effect 5 trailer… it’s called MASS EFFECT UNIVERSE and it’s fucking gorgeous. I’m crying. This is everything I wanted. They were a lot farther than we thought. FUCK EA https://t.co/7rXqCrAiSQ

That is the big question, and it hasn’t been fully answered. EA has not confirmed or denied the trailer’s authenticity, and because it was uploaded anonymously, there is a real chance it could be fake. Several outlets have said it looks legitimate and does not appear to be AI-generated, and a post from Geoff Keighley, the host of The Game Awards, seems to suggest it is genuine.
An alleged EA employee had also claimed on Reddit, before the video appeared, that a trailer for the new game had been ready for a few months, a claim that IGN reportedly corroborated. Taken together, the details point toward authenticity, but until the publisher says something, it remains a leak.
The trailer is especially poignant given what the project was. The next ‘Mass Effect’ game was first teased at The Game Awards in 2020, and as recently as November 2025, BioWare assured fans that it remained in development. Reports have said the team had been reduced to about 50 people, and EA described it as a small team in early development.
The earlier teasers suggested a game set roughly 300 years after ‘Mass Effect 3’, with Liara confirmed to return and species like the Geth set to appear. Seeing a polished cinematic only after the cancellation makes the loss feel sharper for many fans.
The closure is part of a broader EA restructuring that will cut about 400 jobs, roughly 3% of the company’s staff, including about 50 at BioWare, according to Bloomberg. EA is also closing BioWare’s Edmonton studio and has cancelled a planned ‘Sims’ project codenamed Project Lotus, while continuing to invest in sports games, ‘Apex Legends’, ‘Battlefield’, the next ‘Star Wars Jedi’ game and an ‘Iron Man’ title.
The timing has drawn attention because it comes about two months after EA’s sale to private investors led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund was completed, a deal that had already sparked concerns about closures and layoffs.
The news also raises questions about Amazon’s planned ‘Mass Effect’ series for Prime Video. There has been no announcement that the show is cancelled, and reports have said the series remains in production despite the studio’s closure, though Amazon has not publicly clarified what the shutdown means for it.
There is also a glimmer of hope for the franchise itself. A BioWare executive has reportedly said EA is more likely to sell the license for ‘Mass Effect’ and ‘Dragon Age’, which would at least leave open the possibility of a return under new ownership.
For now, the leaked trailer offers a bittersweet glimpse of a game that will likely never be finished. Whether or not the footage is officially confirmed, it has already given fans one last look at the direction BioWare was heading.
Do you think the leaked trailer is genuine?
