Lego’s Rumored ‘Dragon Ball Z’ Wave Could Bring Custom Minifigure Molds for Tons of Characters in 2027

Lego’s push into anime licensing has been building steadily for the past few years, with the toymaker striking deals for franchises like One Piece and Pokemon that proved fans would show up for beloved animated worlds rendered in plastic bricks. Dragon Ball has long sat near the top of fan wish lists for that same treatment, and the pieces finally started falling into place earlier this summer.

That momentum began back in June, when leaks first pointed to a Shenron Diorama as Lego’s debut Dragon Ball Z product, a 1,760-piece display set featuring a young Goku minifigure alongside Dragon Balls and Nimbus cloud elements. Sources at the time described that set as a premium collector’s item under the Lego Icons line, positioned as a test run ahead of something much bigger.

That bigger rollout is now taking clearer shape. According to leaker Brick Tap, citing information from a user known as Buggy along with additional verified anonymous sources, Lego is preparing a full Dragon Ball Z theme for 2027 that will introduce a substantial number of brand-new minifigure molds built specifically for the franchise’s characters.

A separate, more recent leak has added concrete detail to that broader plan, revealing nine specific sets reportedly spanning product numbers 72361 through 72366, themed around Goku vs. Raditz, Arrival on Namek, Z Fighters vs. Saiyans, Porunga and the Final Battle, Frieza’s Spaceship, and Kame House. A standalone Buildable Vegeta figure and a smaller polybag set have also surfaced in the same leak, rounding out what looks like an ambitious opening wave.

What has fans especially excited is the emphasis on custom minifigure molds rather than reused parts pulled from Lego’s existing catalog. Because ‘Dragon Ball Z’ spans a story that follows Goku as the initial protagonist before his sons Gohan and Goten take on larger roles later in the series, a wave built around new molds opens the door for accurately capturing details unique to the franchise, like Goku’s distinct spiky hairstyle or the bulky shoulder armor worn by Frieza’s henchmen.

That level of character-specific detail has historically been difficult for Lego to replicate using standard minifigure parts, making custom molds a meaningful signal that the company is treating this theme as more than a quick licensing cash-in. Given how much the series leans on dramatic power-up transformations and instantly recognizable silhouettes, from Piccolo’s Namekian design to Vegeta’s Saiyan armor, getting those molds right will likely determine how well the sets land with longtime fans.

Most of the newly leaked sets carry recommended age ratings between six and 12, while the Kame House set alone reportedly carries an 18-plus rating, suggesting it will serve as the wave’s most detailed and complex build. That would put it in a similar collector-focused category as the earlier Shenron Diorama, even though the two sets are reportedly arriving under different release windows.

None of these details have been confirmed by Lego, and the company has not made any official statement regarding a Dragon Ball Z theme. Still, with reports pointing to a November 2026 release for the Shenron set and an April 2027 debut for the wider nine-set wave, the timeline suggests fans could see the first pieces of Lego’s Dragon Ball ambitions on shelves before the year’s end.

For a franchise with a fanbase this dedicated, a full theme built around accurate, purpose-made minifigures could become one of Lego’s most significant anime crossovers to date.
