Paul Thomas Anderson’s new action thriller One Battle After Another is coming to theaters this fall, and the first full trailer has finally dropped. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary who joins forces with old allies when a dangerous enemy shows up again after 16 years.

Their mission this time is to rescue the daughter of one of their own. The cast also includes Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti, who makes her film debut.

The story is inspired by the 1990 novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon. Anderson previously adapted Pynchon’s Inherent Vice, and this new project brings his work back to that strange, rebellious world.

According to reports the film is backed by Warner Bros. Pictures and comes with a budget that has grown to over $140 million. Warner reportedly believes DiCaprio’s history at the box office justifies the cost.

Filming began in California in January 2024 and continued in locations like Sacramento, the Anza-Borrego Desert, and even El Paso, Texas. At one point, filming caused some controversy when a homeless camp had to be cleared in Sacramento.

The film was shot on 35mm using VistaVision cameras, with cinematographer Michael Bauman returning after his work on Licorice Pizza. The movie also marks the final collaboration between Anderson and producer Adam Somner, who passed away in 2024.

Early test screenings started in January 2025, and Anderson made a few changes based on audience feedback. Around eight to ten minutes were cut from the final version.

The connection to Vineland was confirmed in March 2025 when Warner Bros. released the teaser. Composer Jonny Greenwood is also back for his sixth film with Anderson.

The full trailer for One Battle After Another has now been released and already won a Golden Trailer Award for its music. The movie was originally planned for August 8 but is now set to be released on September 26, 2025, likely aiming for awards season.

It will also be Anderson’s first film to screen in IMAX. According to reports, the film will need to earn between $260 and $300 million to turn a profit. With a star like DiCaprio leading the way, Warner Bros. is clearly hoping this movie will make a big impact.
