‘Leviticus’ Finally Arrives on Digital, and Its Path There Has Been Anything but Ordinary

Sundance has a long history of launching horror films that go on to become genuine cultural conversations, films that use genre elements to say something much bigger than jump scares alone. This year’s Midnight section delivered exactly that kind of breakout, and now audiences everywhere finally have an easy way to see it.

That film is ‘Leviticus‘, the feature directorial debut of writer-director Adrian Chiarella, which first premiered in the Midnight section of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival back in January before making its way into limited theatrical release over the summer. NEON has confirmed the film’s digital release date, with ‘Leviticus’ now officially available to rent or own on digital platforms starting July 28. The story follows Naim, a teenager who relocates to a small, tightly-knit conservative community alongside his mother, and centers on his complicated bond with another boy in town, Ryan. Together, the two become haunted by a violent supernatural entity following a ceremony at their local church, only to realize the creature has taken the form of the very person each of them desires most: each other.

That premise has resonated strongly with critics, who’ve praised the film for using its supernatural horror elements to explore heavier themes of religious repression and homophobia without losing sight of the tender love story at its core. The film currently holds an impressive ninety-two percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on over one hundred fifty reviews, a striking showing for a first-time director’s debut feature.

Joe Bird, who broke out with his role in ‘Talk to Me’, stars alongside Stacy Clausen as the film’s two central leads, with the pair carrying much of the story’s emotional weight as both romantic interests and reluctant adversaries to the entity hunting them. The supporting cast includes Mia Wasikowska, Jeremy Blewitt, Ewen Leslie, and Davida McKenzie, rounding out a cast built to support the film’s intimate, character-driven approach to horror.

Despite the critical acclaim, ‘Leviticus’ didn’t translate that praise into major box office numbers, grossing just over $842,000 following its theatrical run. That disconnect between critical reception and commercial performance isn’t unusual for smaller genre films, and it’s exactly the kind of gap a strong digital release can help close by reaching audiences who missed the film during its limited theatrical window.

The upcoming home entertainment release is set to include several bonus features for fans eager to dig deeper into the film’s production, including a feature commentary from director Adrian Chiarella, cast interviews, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and the film’s official trailer. For a movie built on tension, atmosphere, and emotional intimacy, those extras offer a chance to unpack exactly how Chiarella pulled off such an assured debut.

With digital access now open to a much wider audience, ‘Leviticus’ has its best shot yet at finding the larger audience its critical reception always suggested it deserved.
