Liam Neeson has revealed which of his films he considers the most underrated, picking the 1996 historical drama Michael Collins.

The actor described the movie as “a personal favourite” and spoke about the deep connection he felt to the role of the Irish revolutionary.

“I was fascinated by him,” Neeson said of Collins, who remains a controversial figure in Irish history. Neeson’s performance captures both the strengths and flaws of the leader, showing a man capable of fiery speeches but also moments of quiet reflection. The actor admitted that the complexity of Collins’ legacy made the role especially thrilling to play.

Michael Collins, directed by Neil Jordan, tells the story of the early-20th-century fight for Irish independence.

Neeson stars as Collins alongside Aidan Quinn, Stephen Rea, Alan Rickman, and Julia Roberts. The film was a major international production involving Ireland, the United States, and the United Kingdom, with much of the filming done in Dublin. Elliot Goldenthal composed the movie’s score.

The film was well-received critically, earning the Golden Lion at the 53rd Venice International Film Festival. Neeson himself won the Best Actor Award at the same festival. Michael Collins opened in a limited release in the United States on October 11, 1996, before a wider release later that month.

It arrived in Ireland on November 8. The movie also received Academy Award nominations for Best Original Score and Best Cinematography.

Neeson’s choice highlights a performance that may not have gained widespread attention over the years, despite its historical significance and critical acclaim. His portrayal of Michael Collins remains a standout in his career, celebrated for bringing depth and humanity to a legendary yet divisive figure.

It’s fascinating to see Neeson champion Michael Collins as underrated. The film’s mix of history, politics, and intense performances deserves a closer look, especially for those who haven’t revisited it in years. What do you think? Do you agree Michael Collins is one of Neeson’s most underrated roles? Share your thoughts in the comments.
