‘Lilo & Stitch’ Surpasses ‘A Minecraft Movie’ to Become 2025’s Second Highest Grossing Film Domestically
Disney’s live-action “Lilo & Stitch” is making big waves at the box office. It recently passed Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie” to become the top-grossing MPA movie worldwide in 2025. According to the latest figures, “Lilo & Stitch” has earned $957.6 million globally, with $553.9 million coming from international markets.
“A Minecraft Movie” is just behind with $954.9 million worldwide and $530.9 million internationally. So far, these two films are the only ones to cross the $900 million mark this year.
Now in its sixth week in theaters, “Lilo & Stitch” is still on track to become 2025’s first billion-dollar movie. Even though “Lilo & Stitch” leads worldwide, “A Minecraft Movie” is still ahead in the U.S. with $423.9 million, compared to “Lilo & Stitch”’s $403.7 million. Both films are the only ones to make more than $400 million domestically in 2025.
This success shows that movies with strong nostalgic and female-led stories are drawing big crowds. For example, “Lilo & Stitch”’s audience is 62% women, similar to hits like “How to Train Your Dragon” with 50% female viewers, and “Moana 2” with 71%. With this trend, studios are feeling better about theaters’ future after tough times with COVID and strikes. Fans are also eagerly waiting for the upcoming release of “Freaky Friday” starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan on August 8.
Internationally, “Lilo & Stitch” is doing especially well. It is the highest-grossing movie of 2025 in countries like Mexico, France, Italy, Spain, and Brazil, as well as all across Latin America. Mexico alone has brought in $66.1 million. Other top markets include the UK with $47.1 million, France at $39.8 million, Brazil with $36 million, Germany at $30.2 million, and China with $25.2 million. The film ranks among the top earners ever in places like Brazil and Mexico, and it holds the record as the highest-grossing Disney live-action movie in Mexico and several smaller markets.
In the U.S., “Lilo & Stitch” had a huge opening weekend, making $182.6 million over four days. This set a new record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend opening ever, beating “Top Gun: Maverick,” which made $160.5 million on Memorial Day weekend. It also had the second-largest four-day holiday opening overall, just behind “Black Panther”’s $242 million during Presidents’ Day weekend in 2018.
It was a smart move for Disney to make a live-action version of the 2002 animated “Lilo & Stitch,” which originally earned $145.7 million in the U.S. and $274.7 million worldwide. The franchise is still popular today, with the original movie streaming for more than 306 million hours on Disney+ globally. The entire “Lilo & Stitch” series and original film have been watched over 579 million hours on the platform.
Retail sales for Stitch have also exploded, growing from $200 million in 2019 to $2.6 billion in 2024. That’s a tenfold increase. Stitch is now one of Disney’s top 10 evergreen franchises, all of which made more than $1 billion in retail sales last year.
Thanks to all this success, Disney has already announced a live-action sequel is in the works.
This information comes from Deadline and other box office reports, showing just how big “Lilo & Stitch” has become around the world.
