Eight months after her split from David Harbour, Lily Allen is opening up about how the breakup shaped her upcoming album.

In an interview with British Vogue published on October 17, the singer explained that the record was a way to process the end of her four-year marriage. “I made this record in December 2024 and it was a way for me to process what was happening in my life,” she said.

“There are things that are on the record that I experienced within my marriage, but that’s not to say that it’s all gospel. It is inspired by what went on in the relationship.”

Allen revealed that she wrote and recorded the album in just 16 days, and described the emotional state she was in while making it. “Confusion, sorrow, grief, helplessness,” she said. Some of the lyrics reflect her experiences directly, such as in the songs Sleepwalking and Dallas Major, touching on infidelity and the challenges she faced.

Despite the heartbreak, Allen says she feels her mental and emotional health is improving and described herself as being in the “thick of recovery.”

The singer also spoke about seeking professional help during this time. “I’ve been into those places before against my will and I feel like that’s progress in itself,” Allen said. “That’s strength. I knew that the things I was feeling were too extreme to be able to manage, and I was like, ‘I need some time away.’”

While Allen has been open about her experience, David Harbour has remained private. In a British GQ interview earlier this year, the Stranger Things star responded briefly to questions about the split with, “Oh boy.”

He later explained that he avoids talking publicly because media coverage often exaggerates the truth. “I’m protective of the people and the reality of my life,” he said. “There’s no use in that form of engaging [with tabloid news] because it’s all based on hysterical hyperbole. It would only fuel a salacious s–tshow of humiliation.”

Allen and Harbour were first linked in early 2019 and confirmed their relationship later that year. They married in Las Vegas in 2020 in a ceremony officiated by an Elvis impersonator. Harbour became stepdad to Allen’s two daughters from a previous relationship.

The couple shared a home in Brooklyn but separated in 2024, with the split publicly confirmed in 2025 by sources to People Magazine.

Reflecting on the relationship in the past, Harbour had described their early marriage positively, saying, “We have these two kids, and it’s so great. We get to raise them and stuff, and as our marriage continues, we grow closer and closer.”

He also recalled in a 2022 interview how he felt a strong connection with Allen early on. “It would take a really extraordinary person to be accepting of the things that I said,” he noted.
