Lindsay Lohan (40) Recreates Her Famous ‘Mean Girls’ Classroom Moment for Mean Girls Day
Few movie lines have turned a calendar date into a holiday the way ‘Mean Girls’ did. Every year on Oct. 3, fans quote the film, wear pink and flood social media with references to one small moment in a math class. It has become an annual ritual for a movie released in 2004.
The moment comes about 24 minutes into the film, when Aaron Samuels, played by Jonathan Bennett, turns to Cady Heron, played by Lindsay Lohan, and asks her what day it is. She answers that it is Oct. 3. Tina Fey wrote the screenplay, and the film has since inspired a Broadway musical and a 2024 movie adaptation with Reneé Rapp.
Lohan has made a habit of marking the day herself. In 2015, she posted a screenshot from the scene on Instagram, and in 2018 she recreated the exchange in a short video that appeared to feature her brother Dakota. In 2024, she and Lacey Chabert promoted their Netflix holiday movies on the film’s 20th anniversary of the date.
This year, she has done it again. Lohan recreated her iconic “it’s October 3rd” scene from ‘Mean Girls.’ The seven-second video was posted by Lohan, and it shows her sitting at a desk in a puffy dark jacket with a notebook in front of her, with a man leaning in beside her holding a pencil.
Lohan uploaded the video on Instagram, where she is seen sitting and writing notes against a background that echoes the movie. She then looks at the camera and winks. The caption read, “It’s October 3rd,” with a pink heart emoji.
The clip quickly went viral, drawing more than 244,000 views on X within hours of Pop Base’s post. Fans filled the comments with Mean Girls Day greetings, and one commenter wrote a simple happy Mean Girls Day. The reaction is a reminder that the film’s pull has barely faded.
Lohan’s co-stars have also kept the tradition alive. Bennett has said he celebrates Mean Girls Day every year, calling it an honor to celebrate the film and its fans. In 2024, he recreated the scene for a Reel shared by People, and other cast members, including Amanda Seyfried and Rajiv Surendra, have joined in over the years.
The date also keeps the idea of a sequel alive. Lohan said in a 2016 Facebook Live interview with CNN that she had been trying hard to make a ‘Mean Girls 2,’ though it was not in her hands. A decade later, fans are still asking.

Part of the appeal is how small the scene is. There is no big set piece, just a boy asking a simple question and a girl giving an answer that fans would repeat for more than two decades. That simplicity has made it easy for stars and fans alike to recreate it.
For Lohan, the annual post is also a quiet way to acknowledge a role that shaped her career. After all these years, she still knows exactly what day it is.
