‘Lioness’ Finale Roars to a Paramount+ Record, and the Renewal Question Just Got Louder
Taylor Sheridan’s name has become shorthand for streaming success on Paramount+, but not every one of his shows climbs the same way. ‘Lioness‘ started with mixed reviews in 2023, then built momentum until it became one of the platform’s pillars. That slow burn makes its latest chapter all the more notable.
The third season arrived after a nearly two-year wait, with Zoe Saldaña back as CIA operative Joe McNamara alongside Nicole Kidman, Michael Kelly and Morgan Freeman. Sheridan wrote all eight episodes, and the season ran weekly from August 2 to September 20, 2026. The premiere itself drew 7.1 million viewers in its first seven days, a solid start for a show returning after such a long gap.
Now the numbers for the finale are in, and they’re the biggest yet. According to Variety’s exclusive report, the ‘Lioness’ finale reached 9.7 million viewers in its first seven days. That makes it the most-watched episode in the show’s history and the No. 5 most-watched finale of any Paramount+ original series.
The season-long figures are just as striking. Season 3 averaged 8.5 million viewers per week, a 62% increase over Season 2’s weekly average, and viewership climbed every week of the eight-episode run. Nielsen’s October 1 report also showed the show’s first billion-minute viewing week, and the season racked up 3.9 billion viewing minutes overall.
The series also held its own against rivals. It landed on Nielsen’s and Luminate’s top 10 charts for eight consecutive weeks, and earlier seasons got a boost from new viewers catching up. Critics have been receptive too, with the season sitting at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 76% from audiences.
It’s worth reading the stats carefully. The figures come from Paramount+’s global internal data rather than an independent Nielsen viewer count, and Paramount calculates the audience by dividing viewing minutes by episode runtime. That makes 9.7 million a viewing-equivalent figure, not a count of 9.7 million individual people.
The 62% growth figure also compares Season 3’s eight-week run with Season 2’s seven-week release window, so it isn’t a perfectly equal comparison. None of that erases the trend, though. By any measure the show grew, and the finale was its high point.
The finale, titled ‘The Unraveling’, likely helped the numbers climb. It revealed that Aaliyah Amrohi, played by Stephanie Nur, was the mastermind behind Joe’s abduction, tying the season directly back to events from the first season. Joe then returned home to find her house empty and for sale, after her husband Neal left with their children.
Saldaña has said she pushed Sheridan toward that ending, arguing it was the only realistic consequence of Joe’s commitment to her work. She has also said she hopes Joe and Neal’s story doesn’t end there if the series continues. That’s the kind of unresolved thread that keeps audiences talking.

Here’s the catch. Despite the record-breaking numbers, Paramount+ hasn’t officially renewed ‘Lioness’ for a fourth season. The streamer has been slow to commit before, with months passing between the end of Season 2 and the confirmation that Season 3 was moving forward.

Cast members seem confident anyway. Jill Wagner, who plays Bobby and is also a producer, has publicly said she expects a fourth season once people see Sheridan’s finale. There are some open questions, however, including Saldaña’s status, since she reportedly originally signed a three-season contract as a main cast member and executive producer.
With a cliffhanger like that and numbers like these, a renewal seems like a matter of when rather than if. All three seasons are streaming now on Paramount+, so newcomers have plenty of time to catch up before the announcement.
Should ‘Lioness’ Be Renewed for Season 4?
