Netflix’s new version of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ may take a different path from the classic NBC series, but it still found a clever way to honor the original show. While the reboot introduces a new cast and a fresh take on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s story, longtime fans were given a special surprise that was easy to miss.

The hidden connection comes in the form of Alison Arngrim, the actress who became famous for playing Nellie Oleson in the original ‘Little House on the Prairie’ series that ran from 1974 to 1983. Instead of bringing back Nellie herself right away, the Netflix series uses Arngrim in a completely different role during a tense moment in the first season.

The cameo happens in Episode 2, during a storyline involving John Edwards, a lonely man who helps the Ingalls family build their new home. After Caroline Ingalls discovers more about his troubled past and pushes him away, Edwards disappears, leaving Laura and Mary searching for him across the countryside.

While looking for Edwards, the girls become lost and eventually discover a group of strangers gathered around a fire. Among them is a woman played by Arngrim who appears friendly at first, but the situation quickly becomes uncomfortable. The scene turns into a tense moment as Laura realizes the strangers may not have good intentions.

The episode eventually reveals that Edwards arrives in time to protect the girls, turning the frightening encounter into an important lesson about trust and safety. But for fans of the original series, the biggest surprise was seeing Arngrim appear in the reboot.

According to Parade, showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine came up with the idea of bringing Arngrim into the series as a fun tribute to the original show. Sonnenshine explained that she wanted to include the actress because of the importance of Nellie Oleson to longtime fans.

“I wrote that episode, and then I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to bring in Alison Arngrim as this crazy woman on the prairie?” Sonnenshine said, explaining that she felt Arngrim would be perfect for the unusual role.

The showrunner also revealed that the idea almost slipped her mind until production began. Although Nellie Oleson does not appear in the first season because the story has not yet reached Walnut Grove, Sonnenshine wanted to find another way to celebrate the character’s legacy.

“I know how much Nellie Oleson means to people as a character,” Sonnenshine said. “She doesn’t appear in the season because they haven’t made it to Walnut Grove yet. But I thought this is a way that we could bring her in because she’s so important to people.”

Arngrim reportedly embraced the opportunity and fully committed to the role. Sonnenshine praised the actress for being willing to make the character look completely different and for bringing energy to the scene.

“She was such a great sport,” Sonnenshine recalled. “She was like, ‘Can I have more stuff on my teeth?’”

While Arngrim is currently the only original cast member to appear in Netflix’s reboot, Sonnenshine said she has had positive experiences meeting other actors from the classic series. She added that many of them have been supportive of the new adaptation.
