Netflix has officially kicked off production on its new live-action take on Mobile Suit Gundam, and it has now revealed the main cast. The update comes directly from Netflix, which confirmed that filming is already underway in Queensland, Australia.

The movie will feature a group of 11 actors. While their roles are still being kept secret, the cast includes Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, along with Jackson White, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Michael Mando, Javon Walton, Oleksandr Rudynskyi, Ida Brooke, Gemma Chua-Tran, and Jason Isaacs.

Netflix also gave a short look at the story. “Gundam, the iconic franchise that launched a global phenomenon, is now in production as a live-action film — starring Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo — about rival mech pilots at war across Earth and its space colonies.” This suggests the film will focus on large-scale battles between pilots using giant machines, staying close to the core idea of the franchise.

The project is being made together by Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks. Jim Mickle is directing the film and is also producing it with Linda Moran under their company Nightshade. Some of the actors, including Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, are also part of the producing team.

Other names involved in production include Kale Boiter, Ali Mendes, and Enzo Marc. Executive producers include Matthew Jenkins, as well as Makoto Asanuma and Naohiro Ogata, who have worked on several Gundam projects before, including Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury and Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway.

The Gundam series first started in 1979, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It began as an anime about a war between Earth and space colonies, where both sides used giant robots called mobile suits. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most well-known sci-fi franchises in the world.

With filming now in progress and a full cast announced, the live-action Gundam movie is moving ahead as one of Netflix’s bigger upcoming projects.

Tthis is an interesting but risky project. Gundam has a huge fanbase, and live-action anime adaptations don’t always work well. The cast looks strong, but the real challenge will be how they handle the story and the large-scale battles. If done right, it could be a big hit. If not, fans will notice quickly.
