The live-action version of Sakamoto Days is moving forward, and the film’s official website has shared a new teaser that gives fans their first real look at the project.

The trailer also confirmed that the movie will open in Japan on April 29, 2026. This update comes directly from the film’s website, which has been releasing news as production continues.

The teaser introduces Ren Meguro as Taro Sakamoto, showing his full “fat” look for the first time. According to the website, Meguro spent hours each day in special makeup to become the round and retired hitman.

The movie is being directed by Yuichi Fukuda, who is known for the live-action Gintama films. Fukuda is also writing the script. Action scenes are being handled by Keiya Taguchi, who worked on the Attack on Titan live-action films and Shin Kamen Rider. Fukuda and Taguchi have worked together before on the Under Ninja live-action movie.

The film’s cast includes Fumiya Takahashi as Shin Asakura, Aya Ueto as Aoi Sakamoto and Miyu Yoshimoto as Hana Sakamoto. These details were also shared through the official announcements tied to the production.

The original manga was created by Yuto Suzuki and has been running in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2020. In Japan, 25 volumes have been released, while 19 are available in English. The anime version directed by Masaki Watanabe premiered in early 2025 and is streaming on Netflix.

Shonen Jump and VIZ Media describe the story as one centered on a former assassin who steps away from the violent life to run a small store with his family. The peace does not last, and his old world soon returns to pull him back in. The official description says, “Time has passed peacefully for Sakamoto since he left the underworld… return to the assassin world or die!”
