M. Night Shyamalan Teases His Next Movie With Mysterious Photos
Few directors move as quickly from one project to the next as M. Night Shyamalan. Even before a film reaches theaters, he’s often deep into the next one, filling notebooks with ideas and sketching out outlines. It’s a creative rhythm that has defined his career for decades.
His latest film, ‘Remain’, is still months away. The supernatural romantic thriller, co-created with novelist Nicholas Sparks, was originally set for October 23, 2026, but Warner Bros. moved it to February 5, 2027, with an international rollout starting February 3. The studio cited the film’s romantic storyline and strong presales for ‘Wuthering Heights’, along with the highest test scores of Shyamalan’s career.
Now Shyamalan is looking ahead. He says he has started working on his next movie, an idea he’s been carrying around for many, many years. It’s a tantalizing tease with no title, cast or genre attached, though it fits a pattern he has followed for years.
Shyamalan has long described a ritual for each new project. In a 2024 Instagram post, he explained that he picks a notebook that speaks to him and fills it with notes and ideas. Once it’s overflowing, he moves to an outline and then a script.

That habit surfaced again recently. In an interview with Collider during his Beyond Fest retrospective, he held up the notes for the film that comes after ‘Remain’, saying it’s still just notes. So the project is at the earliest stage of development, with no script or announcement yet.
The comments come on the heels of a big few weeks for the filmmaker. Beyond Fest and American Cinematheque hosted his first West Coast retrospective, covering nearly three decades of work. At a screening of ‘The Sixth Sense’ on September 29, he surprised the audience by showing ‘Remain’ instead, followed by a Q&A moderated by Jon M. Chu.
Early reactions were enthusiastic. Attendees called it a romantic throwback to his early work, praising its sincerity and another score from James Newton Howard. One viewer said Jake Gyllenhaal is a perfect Shyamalan lead, subdued but soulful.
The film follows New York architect Tate Donovan, played by Gyllenhaal, who arrives in Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home while rebuilding his life. There he meets Wren, played by Phoebe Dynevor, in a story that blends love and unease. The cast also includes Julie Hagerty, Jay O. Sanders, Ashley Walters and Tracy Ifeachor.
Shyamalan and Sparks developed the story together, with Shyamalan writing the screenplay while Sparks wrote a novel. The novel, released in October 2025, became a No. 1 New York Times bestseller. Shyamalan has been clear that the film isn’t an adaptation and the book isn’t a novelization, but two storytellers telling the same story their own way.
Another notable part of Shyamalan’s approach is how he funds his movies. He has self-financed his films for years, with studios like Warner Bros. typically joining as distributors. His last film, ‘Trap’, grossed $83 million worldwide on a production budget of $30 million.
That independence gives him room to work on projects he’s been developing for a long time, like the one he’s teasing now. It also explains why he can start a new idea while a finished film is still waiting for release. For a director who admits he’s driven to focus on what comes next, it’s a natural way to work.
Shyamalan has also been opening up in new ways. In August, he launched a YouTube channel to connect with fans, describing it as a chance to reflect and get to know each other. In his first video, he showed a bench outside his office where he goes to think, and said he wants to embrace the messiness of the creative process.
That tone fits the moment. Shyamalan has spent 30 years making movies, and he seems interested in undoing some of the stigmas around his work. Sharing early glimpses of a new idea is part of that.
For now, there are more questions than answers. Shyamalan hasn’t said what the new project is, when it might shoot or whether it will arrive through Warner Bros. Given his track record, a surprise announcement could come at any time.
What’s clear is that the idea has been with him for years. After a string of hits, a bestselling novel partnership and a film he calls his highest-testing yet, he seems ready to finally bring it to life.
