M. Night Shyamalan’s Supernatural Romantic Thriller Gets an Important Production Update
M. Night Shyamalan has started filming his new movie, Remain. This upcoming film is a supernatural romantic thriller that Shyamalan wrote, directed, and produced.
The story was created with the help of Nicholas Sparks, who also wrote a novel based on the same idea. The movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor, and Ashley Walters.
The director confirmed the start of production via post on his Instagram account with a caption: “Day 1. Film started rolling! Feeling very very grateful.“
The story follows Tate Donovan, a New York architect played by Gyllenhaal. Tate travels to Cape Cod to design a summer home for his best friend.
He is looking for a fresh start after dealing with severe depression. While there, he meets a young woman named Wren, played by Dynevor, who shakes up his carefully planned life.
The project was first announced in January 2025. Shyamalan teamed up with Sparks, who explained that his manager asked him to come up with a story that would fit both his and Shyamalan’s audience.
After meeting and sharing ideas, they chose to go with Shyamalan’s story. Early in 2025, the casting was revealed, with Gyllenhaal in the lead and Dynevor and Walters joining soon after. The film was officially titled Remain in April 2025.
Filming will mainly take place in Rhode Island. Some of the filming locations include Bristol, Providence, and Warren. One notable spot that will be used is the historic Cranston Street Armory in Providence.
Shyamalan’s production company, Blinding Edge Pictures, rented the armory from May to November for $10,000 a month and moved in on May 1. Filming is expected to wrap up by August 8.
Warner Bros. Pictures will release Remain in theaters on October 23, 2026.
According to Nicholas Sparks, Remain blends Shyamalan’s supernatural style with a romantic story, creating something fresh but familiar. Fans of both creators are likely to find something exciting in this new film.
