Macaulay Culkin has finally spoken out about one of the most debated questions in Home Alone fandom: how the McCallister family could afford their lavish lifestyle. For years, fans have speculated about the family’s wealth, with some even joking that Kevin’s dad, Peter McCallister, might be involved in organized crime.

The McCallisters live in a large mansion in the affluent town of Winnetka, Illinois, now valued at roughly $5.5 million. They have five children and frequently travel abroad, visiting places like Paris and Miami, which added fuel to the speculation about their income.

In a recent interview with the Toronto Sun, Culkin shared his own theory about Peter McCallister’s job. “I think his father was a corporate lawyer, that’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood,” he said. He also commented on the mother’s role in the family’s appearance, adding, “His mother was an interior decorator, that’s why the house was so nice.”

Culkin’s take aligns with a previous comment from Home Alone director Chris Columbus. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Columbus said he and writer John Hughes had discussed the parents’ jobs while developing the story.

“The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did,” he said. Columbus also joked, “Not organised crime — even though there was, at the time, a lot of organised crime in Chicago.”

These comments provide a more realistic explanation for the McCallisters’ wealth, putting an end to fan theories about criminal activity. Culkin and Columbus both suggest that the family’s fortune comes from high-paying, normal careers rather than anything illicit.
