Mahershala Ali Leads a Powerful New Story in a New Trailer for ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’
Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali is stepping into a darker and more intense role with ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,’ an upcoming action drama written and directed by Bassam Tariq. The first official trailer for the film has now been released, giving audiences their first major look at Ali’s emotional and dangerous journey.
The movie follows Latif, a deeply religious hitman whose life changes after the death of his wife. With his family in danger, Latif is forced to travel across Houston to protect his children while facing enemies closing in on him. At the same time, he begins questioning the beliefs and choices that have guided his entire life.
The newly released trailer highlights the film’s mix of action, family drama, and personal conflict. Ali’s character appears caught between his violent past and his desire to become a better person for his children. The footage also introduces the powerful forces standing in his way, teasing a story that focuses as much on internal struggles as it does on physical battles.
Bassam Tariq wrote and directed the film, marking another major project for the filmmaker after his previous work in independent cinema. According to reports about the production, Tariq developed the story from a deeply personal place after experiencing a near-tragedy in his own life. That emotional connection helped shape the movie’s themes of faith, family, loss, and redemption.
Ali and Tariq already had a connection before working on ‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother.’ The two previously crossed paths when Tariq was attached to direct Marvel Studios’ ‘Blade,’ which Ali was originally set to star in. Although that project went through years of delays and creative changes, the collaboration between Ali and Tariq eventually led them to create this original story together.
The cast also features a strong lineup of talent, including John Cho as Kwan, a religious leader, along with Giancarlo Esposito, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone, Abubakr Ali, Laith Nakli, Adia, and Jahleel Kamara.
Production on the film began in March 2025, with filming taking place in Atlanta before wrapping later that year. The project was developed as an original story rather than an adaptation, allowing Tariq and Ali to build a completely new character-driven thriller.
‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ will make its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival before arriving in theaters in the United States on September 25, 2026, through Amazon MGM Studios.
With its first trailer now available, the film is already creating interest as one of Ali’s most unique upcoming projects. Rather than focusing only on action, the movie appears to explore questions about family, faith, and whether someone can escape the life they once lived.
