Maika Monroe Stuns in Horror Comeback With “Resident Evil: Requiem” Live-Action Trailer
Maika Monroe is back in the horror spotlight with a new live-action trailer for the upcoming video game adaptation, Resident Evil: Requiem. Known for her roles in Longlegs, Reminders of Him, and It Follows, Monroe takes on the role of a mother trying to survive the infamous Raccoon City outbreak in the 1990s.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about the shoot, Monroe described the set as pure chaos. “Cops and dogs and smoke machines — it was just chaos,” she said. “I mean, it really felt like chaos.”
The trailer, filmed in Mexico City, shows Monroe navigating the streets filled with zombies and other creatures while trying to protect her daughter. A flash-forward scene reveals her zombified character clutching a photo of her family. “What I loved about it was it had a lot of heart,” Monroe added. “It’s really heartbreaking, the story that you’re watching unfold. I just thought it was a really interesting and a new way to portray this video game coming out.”

Monroe doesn’t play any established Resident Evil character. Instead, her story acts as a short, cinematic narrative set in the Raccoon City universe, giving fans a new perspective on the chaos caused by the T-virus and the Umbrella Corporation. The live-action trailer has also been paired with a citywide marketing campaign in New York and Los Angeles, including posters with the tagline, “Evil Has Always Had a Name,” which lead fans to the trailer via QR codes.
Resident Evil: Requiem is the ninth main game in the series, following Resident Evil Village (2021). The game features a new protagonist, FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft, who investigates the aftermath of the Raccoon City incident alongside federal agent Leon S. Kennedy. Players alternate between Grace, who uses survival horror mechanics to evade monsters, and Leon, whose missions are more combat-focused.
The game is directed by Koshi Nakanishi, who returns after Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, and was first revealed at Summer Game Fest 2025 as part of the franchise’s 30th anniversary. It continues the overarching story from the Raccoon City outbreak and the Umbrella Corporation’s activities last seen in Resident Evil 6 (2012). Resident Evil: Requiem is set to release on February 27, for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S.
This trailer gives the Resident Evil universe a fresh, cinematic twist while keeping fans of the games engaged. Monroe’s performance adds emotional weight to the horror, making the story feel personal. It’s exciting to see a video game adaptation take such a character-driven approach.
