A man in China completely changed his life by following the intense anime workout from One Punch Man every single day for 1,000 days. Li Shuangyong, 36, decided to take on the challenge after hitting rock bottom in his life. He had lost his fish farming business, fallen into debt, and his marriage ended.

Feeling like things couldn’t get any worse, Shuangyong found inspiration in the Japanese manga series One-Punch Man.

“I had to save myself. I could not keep living like that. It could not get any worse,” Shuangyong told Jiupai News.

The workout he followed is famously brutal. It’s the same training routine that Saitama, the hero of the series, uses to become super strong: 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10-kilometer run every single day. In fiction, this routine instantly transforms Saitama, but in real life, it takes extreme discipline.

Shuangyong didn’t have money for fancy gear, so he ran in shoes that cost less than 10 yuan, which is about £1.10, and survived mostly on eggs and instant noodles. He documented his journey, posting daily videos of his workouts online. His dedication quickly drew attention in China, and he gained fans who encouraged him, livestreamed his runs from Taiwan, and even sponsors who sent him running shoes and supplements.

After 1,000 days, which adds up to over 20,000 kilometers run and hundreds of thousands of reps of push-ups, sit-ups, and squats, Shuangyong completed the challenge. To celebrate, he shaved his head and dressed up as Saitama, catching the attention of the manga’s creator, who said, “Your willpower is incredible! Congratulations.”

Now, Shuangyong isn’t stopping there. He plans to attempt a Guinness World Record by running a marathon every day for a full year. He explained his motivation by saying he wants to “amplify hope without limits.”

While many online commentators have pointed out that such a strict daily routine isn’t sustainable for most people, there’s no denying the power of Shuangyong’s determination. His story shows how sheer willpower and consistency can completely transform a person’s life, even when starting from the lowest point.

The One Punch Man workout might be extreme, but for Shuangyong, it was the spark that gave him purpose, health, and a new beginning.
