Margot Robbie has revealed that one of the most talked-about moments in her new film Babylon wasn’t planned. The actress told E! News that her kiss with co-star Brad Pitt was completely improvised.

“That wasn’t in the script,” Robbie said. “But I thought, ‘When else am I gonna get the chance to kiss Brad Pitt? I’m just gonna go for it.’”

In Babylon, Robbie plays Nellie, an aspiring actress in 1920s Hollywood trying to make it big. She navigates the industry alongside Manny Torres, played by Diego Calva, and veteran actor Jack Conrad, played by Pitt.

Robbie admitted she had to convince director Damien Chazelle to allow the unscripted kiss. “I said, ‘Damien, I think Nellie would just go up and kiss Jack,’” she explained. “And Damien was like, ‘Well, she could—wait, hold on. You just wanna kiss Brad Pitt.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, so sue me. This opportunity might never come up again.’ And he was like, ‘It does work for the character,’ and I was like, ‘I think so.’”

The director liked the take so much that he asked them to do it again. “He was like, ‘No, do it again. That really works,’” Robbie joked. She also revealed that she shared a kiss with Katherine Waterston during filming.

Babylon, written and directed by Damien Chazelle, is an epic period black comedy-drama set during Hollywood’s transition from silent films to talkies in the late 1920s. The film features an ensemble cast including Pitt, Robbie, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, and Li Jun Li. The project began development in 2019, with filming taking place in Los Angeles from July to October 2021.

The film premiered in Los Angeles on November 14, 2022, and was released in the United States on December 23, 2022. While Babylon struggled at the box office, earning $63 million against a $78–80 million budget, it has since been better received by critics and audiences. The film also earned multiple award nominations, including five Golden Globes and three Academy Awards nominations.
