Margot Robbie might soon be taking on one of the most shocking roles in movie history. The Australian actress, 35, is reportedly in advanced talks to play a new version of Patrick Bateman, the part-time serial killer made famous by Christian Bale in American Psycho.

According to The Sun, plans are moving ahead for a bold remake of the cult classic, this time with a female lead stepping into Bateman’s expensive shoes. One insider told the outlet that the idea behind the reboot is to flip the story on its head.

“Brett’s novel and the film were so controversial, and the people working on the remake wanted to twist the narrative by having a female actress take on the lead of Bateman,” the source said.

“There was a huge backlash about misogyny when the novel came out back in the Nineties, and by having a female killer, it puts a different spin on the crimes.”

The insider added that the role could give Margot Robbie a chance to show off her incredible acting range. Still, fans might want to hold off on celebrating too soon, as the source explained that the deal isn’t fully finalized yet.

The original American Psycho, directed by Mary Harron and based on Bret Easton Ellis’s 1991 novel, hit cinemas in 2000.

It starred Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a wealthy New York yuppie who hides his dark and violent side beneath his polished suits and perfect smile. The film was met with mixed reactions, critics praised Bale’s wild performance and the movie’s dark humor, while others thought it was as empty as the world it mocked.

Over time, though, American Psycho became a cult favorite and turned Bale into a global star. Talk of a remake started back in 2024 when Deadline revealed that Lionsgate was developing the project with director Luca Guadagnino attached.

The studio has reportedly been trying to get a new version off the ground for a while, and insiders say executives are excited to see what Guadagnino, known for his stylish and unsettling films, will do with the story.
