She joined a judging panel that included James Cameron, who appeared virtually, along with Sarah Snook and Dylan River. The group reviewed 16 finalist films. Each short had to be under seven minutes and include this year’s required item, an hourglass.
Tens of thousands of people gathered outdoors to watch the screenings. According to event organizers, the festival was supported by YouTube and CommBank. Founder John Polson praised Robbie’s involvement and said, It’s a true privilege to welcome Margot Robbie home to lead the Tropfest Jury.
The festival ended with $100,000 in prizes awarded to emerging filmmakers. The funding is meant to help new talent grow in the industry.
Robbie’s appearance in Sydney comes during a busy year for her career. She recently starred in a new adaptation of Wuthering Heights directed by Emerald Fennell. In the film, she plays Catherine Earnshaw opposite Jacob Elordi. She described the role as a puzzle you want to solve. The movie reportedly recovered its $80 million budget within days of release despite mixed reviews.
Through her company, LuckyChap Entertainment, Robbie continues to focus on female-led stories and new voices. She is also preparing for several upcoming projects, including a live-action The Sims film, and a prequel to Ocean’s Eleven.
Her return to Tropfest showed her ongoing support for the Australian film scene. Even with major Hollywood projects on her schedule, she made time to spotlight short filmmakers in her home country.
It is important when global stars come back and support local talent. It sends a strong message to young filmmakers that their work matters. What do you think about Margot Robbie leading Tropfest and her recent film choices? Share your thoughts in the comments.
