There’s buzz that Lee Isaac Chung, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated movie Minari, is in talks to direct the upcoming Ocean’s Eleven prequel for Warner Bros. Pictures. The project is being produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap Entertainment, but details about the story are still under wraps, true to the secretive nature of the Ocean’s franchise.

The film is still in early development, and no cast deals have been finalized yet. Carrie Solomon wrote the current screenplay, which is based on characters created by George Clayton Johnson and Jack Golden Russell.

Back in May 2022, it was announced that this prequel would be set in 1960s Europe. It’s designed to fit within the existing Ocean’s universe and won’t be a reboot. Margot Robbie is set to star and produce the film, while Jay Roach was originally attached to direct, with Carrie Solomon writing the script.

Roach and Tom Ackerley were also expected to produce alongside Robbie. The production is a joint effort between Warner Bros. Pictures, LuckyChap Entertainment, and Village Roadshow Pictures.

Soon after the project was announced, Ryan Gosling entered early talks to co-star with Robbie. In December 2023, it was revealed that Robbie and Gosling would be playing the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean, the characters famously played by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock.

The film was initially expected to begin production in spring 2023 but faced delays due to scheduling conflicts with the cast.

While it’s still unclear whether Lee Isaac Chung will officially take the director’s seat, this update adds some excitement to the Ocean’s prequel’s future. Fans are eager to see how this new story connects to the original films and what fresh twists it will bring.
