Disney is entering the world of artificial intelligence with a major new partnership with OpenAI. The deal, reportedly worth $1 billion, will allow OpenAI’s short-form video platform, Sora, to use Disney characters to create user-generated videos.

The agreement is said to run for three years and covers more than 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars. Fans will be able to make their own short clips featuring characters like Mickey Mouse, Elsa, and Darth Vader. Some of these AI-generated videos could also be shared on Disney+.

Importantly, the deal does not use the voices or likenesses of the actors behind the characters. This approach helps Disney avoid complex compensation and rights issues.

Mark Hamill, the actor behind Luke Skywalker, expressed mixed feelings about the partnership. He said it’s “fascinating to see it develop, and I’m also apprehensive about how it will be used.” He also reflected on the long-term implications, wondering if characters could continue to appear in projects decades after the original actors are gone, adding, “I guess I’m gonna have to talk to my family about if they want me to be in a ‘Star Wars’ movie 30 years from now after I’m gone.”

This move signals Disney’s serious investment in AI and its potential for fan engagement. By combining technology with its beloved characters, Disney may reshape how audiences interact with its stories.

This is an exciting but complicated step for Disney. AI-generated content could bring new creativity and fun for fans, but it also raises questions about the future of actors’ roles and control over iconic characters.
