Marlon Wayans is back with Scary Movie 6, and he’s making it clear that this new chapter will not hold back. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Wayans said the goal of the film is to bring back bold, fearless comedy, and to take a jab at cancel culture.

“What we’re trying to do is bring back laughter,” he told EW. “This is about bringing back comedy the way it used to be. And I think the only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture.”

Wayans explained that the film will keep the spirit of the original series, which he started with brothers Shawn and Keenen Ivory Wayans over 25 years ago.

He promised that nobody is off-limits. “We’re gonna do what we always do. We’re gonna make fun of everybody because we’re equal opportunity offenders,” he said. He added that the humor comes from their family and the way they were raised, with a style that’s hard to copy.

The trailer hints at this approach, showing over-the-top scenes and jokes about politics, pronouns, and safe spaces. Wayans emphasized that the movie is for multiple generations. “This movie is multi-generational. It’s a conversation comedically that is needed, that needs to be had from our generation down to Gen… Gen Alpha. And it’s all inclusive,” he said.

Wayans also spoke about why he returned to the franchise after more than two decades. He cited the dismantling of the Weinstein regime, his father encouraging the brothers to work together again, and a sense of purpose he felt from God.

“I got me and my brothers together to come back to a franchise that we were removed from,” he said. “I think the assignment is to bring back the cast, bring back me and my brothers working together, and to bring back big-a** laughs. The world needs a big-a** laugh.”

Scary Movie 6 reunites original stars like Anna Faris and Regina Hall, along with the Wayans brothers themselves. The film promises the same outrageous, edgy humor fans have come to expect, while also taking aim at modern trends in culture and comedy.

In my opinion, Marlon Wayans is clearly committed to reviving the franchise in a way that pushes boundaries and sparks conversation. Whether you agree with his approach or not, it’s bold to tackle cancel culture head-on through comedy. What do you think about the idea of a movie “canceling cancel culture”?
