Martin Scorsese is gearing up for his next movie, and it already has Hollywood buzzing. The Oscar-winning director will adapt Peter Cameron’s ghost story novel What Happens at Night with Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in the lead roles.

Apple Original Films is in talks to produce the film with Studiocanal, which acquired the rights to the book in 2023.

The screenplay will be written by Patrick Marber, known for his Oscar-nominated work on Notes on a Scandal. With both DiCaprio and Lawrence attached, the project brings together some of the industry’s top talent.

The story follows an American couple traveling to a snowy European city to adopt a child. The wife is battling cancer, and her health makes the adoption process even more difficult.

When they arrive, they stay at a mysterious, nearly empty hotel filled with strange characters, from a flamboyant singer to a shady businessman and a puzzling faith healer. As the couple struggles to claim their baby, they face challenges that test their marriage, their understanding of themselves, and their view of life.

Apple has close ties with all the key players. The studio previously backed Scorsese and DiCaprio’s Killers of the Flower Moon and has first-look deals with their production companies, Sikelia and Appian Way. Apple also distributed Lawrence’s 2022 film Causeway.

With a top director, two of Hollywood’s biggest stars, and a story full of mystery and emotion, What Happens at Night is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated films in development.
