Timothée Chalamet is earning rave reviews for his latest film, Marty Supreme, which is quickly becoming one of the highest-rated movies of his career. The sports comedy-drama, directed and co-written by Josh Safdie with Ronald Bronstein, is loosely based on the life of American table tennis player Marty Reisman.

Chalamet not only stars in the film but also serves as a producer. The cast also includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma, Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher.

Marty Supreme premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 6, and will be released in the United States by A24 on December 25. The film has already drawn praise from critics for its direction, screenplay, editing, and score. Rotten Tomatoes shows the film with a 95 percent Tomatometer score based on 141 reviews, signaling strong acclaim.

Chalamet’s performance in Marty Supreme is being called career-defining. Ben Wasserman from Film-Forward.com noted, “With his latest performance in A24’s Marty Supreme, he might just get it” in reference to a potential Oscar. Jeff Mitchell from the Phoenix Film Festival added, “Chalamet could win the Best Actor Oscar, and he wouldn’t need any topspin to do it.”

Critics also highlighted the energy and skill Chalamet brings to his role. Mark Jackson of Epoch Times described Marty as “a cunning rascal juggling 15 balls simultaneously, and the pressure-cooker anxiety he generates will raise your blood pressure.” Jocelyn Noveck from the Associated Press called the performance “a delicious synergy of actor, role and whatever fairy dust makes a performance feel both preordained and magically fresh.”

The film itself has been praised as well. Fico Cangiano from CineXpress wrote that Marty Supreme is “phenomenal,” combining elements of classic thrillers with intense sports action. Wendy Ide of the Observer (UK) described the movie as “a thrilling visual onslaught… utterly exhausting and I loved every jangling second.” Even with some pacing issues noted by Julian Roman of MovieWeb, he added that Chalamet “dazzles with moxy in a tour de force, awards-worthy performance.”

Marty Supreme tells the story of Marty Mauser, a young table tennis player in 1950s New York, chasing greatness in a world full of challenges. Critics say the mix of drama, comedy, and sports action works well to create an engaging story that keeps audiences invested.

The film has already been named one of the top ten films of 2025 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute and earned three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Chalamet, and Best Screenplay for Safdie and Bronstein.
