Marvel and IMAX Fans Just Got the News They’ve Been Waiting For

Marvel fans in the United States have gotten used to seeing the studio’s biggest releases dominate every premium format screen available. Between IMAX exclusivity deals and marketing campaigns built entirely around the giant screen experience, that kind of treatment has become almost expected for any major superhero blockbuster hitting theaters.

This year is shaping up differently, and the reason has nothing to do with the films themselves. A packed release calendar has left two of Marvel’s biggest upcoming projects competing for premium screen space against two of the industry’s other most anticipated titles, and Marvel is losing that fight domestically.

According to a recent IMAX investor presentation, both ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day‘ and ‘Avengers Doomsday’ are listed as playing in IMAX only in select international markets, with no confirmed domestic IMAX release for either film. That leaves American audiences without access to the format for two of the year’s most anticipated superhero releases.

The scheduling conflict traces back to timing. Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ locked down an extended IMAX exclusivity window in the United States ahead of ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ arriving just weeks later, while ‘Dune Part Three’ secured its own domestic IMAX exclusivity for the same December window where ‘Avengers Doomsday’ now lands after being moved from its original May release date.

International audiences are faring considerably better in this particular scheduling squeeze. ‘Spider-Man Brand New Day’ will actually open in mainland China on July 29, two days ahead of its North American release, with an IMAX version available there simultaneously even though American theaters have no such option lined up.

That kind of day and date IMAX access overseas stands in sharp contrast to the situation domestically, where Sony and Marvel’s Spidey sequel has to make do without the format entirely during its opening stretch. For a film reportedly shot with IMAX cameras in mind, missing that format at home represents a significant loss for audiences hoping to see it the way it was intended.

‘Avengers Doomsday’ faces a more complicated international rollout by comparison, with a mainland China release date still unconfirmed as of now. The film is confirmed for a December 16 release in Taiwan, two days ahead of its North American debut, though its exact IMAX footprint across other international markets remains tied to the same general “select markets” language used in the investor presentation.

Domestically, Disney has taken a different approach entirely for ‘Avengers Doomsday,’ partnering with premium large format screens under its own branded Infinity Vision presentation rather than competing for IMAX real estate already claimed by ‘Dune Part Three.’ Advance tickets for that giant screen format went on sale five months ahead of release, mirroring the kind of early ticket strategy Universal used for ‘The Odyssey.’

Do you think Marvel should have secured IMAX releases in the US for these movies?

For fans in the United States, the workaround means waiting to see whether either film eventually secures IMAX screens once ‘The Odyssey’ and ‘Dune Part Three’ complete their respective exclusivity windows. Until then, moviegoers overseas in markets with confirmed IMAX access are positioned to get the fuller theatrical experience first.

With both Marvel tentpoles representing some of the studio’s most ambitious projects in years, missing out on premium domestic formats during their crucial opening weeks is a real blow for American fans. Do you think Marvel should have fought harder to secure IMAX screens stateside, share your thoughts in the comments.
