Marvel Assembles the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Cast for a ‘Silence Your Phones’ PSA, and Even Doctor Doom Can’t Compete With a Ringtone
Movie theater etiquette reminders are rarely anyone’s favorite part of a night out, but Marvel has learned to treat them as prime advertising space. The studio is never shy about turning even the smallest pre-show moment into a marketing opportunity. This time, the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ promo turns a routine phone reminder into a cast roll call.
The stage was set by the return of ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’, which opened in theaters on Sept. 25 as the official lead-in to ‘Doomsday‘. The re-release added 4 new scenes shot during production on the upcoming film, and it pulled in $86 million worldwide over the weekend, including $26 million in the US and Canada. That made it the third-best domestic opening for a re-release ever, behind only the 1997 ‘Star Wars’ Special Edition and ‘The Lion King 3D’ in 2011.
Audiences who bought tickets last week got a surprise before the film even started. On Monday, Marvel Studios officially released the “Silence Your Phones” PSA online, posting it with the tagline “Assemble respectfully” and a reminder that tickets are on sale for the Dec. 18 release. The clip posted online runs 31 seconds, and the theater version was reported to be around 20 seconds.

The spot opens with footage of the Thor and Doctor Doom fight glimpsed in the ‘Doomsday’ trailers, complete with crackling lightning and a cloaked figure standing in the mist. Then a cell phone rings loudly, and the scene cuts to a movie theater packed with ‘Doomsday’ characters yelling in frustration.
Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova can be heard saying “no, no, no!” as the ringing continues. A message then urges everyone to silence their phones, all set to the classic Avengers theme.
The gag doubles as a lineup of the film’s three-universe ensemble. Seen in full costume are Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Anthony Mackie as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Winston Duke as M’Baku and Tenoch Huerta Mejia as Namor.
Also in the crowd are Pedro Pascal as Mister Fantastic and Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, plus the Fox-era X-Men: James Marsden’s Cyclops, Rebecca Romijn’s Mystique and Channing Tatum’s Gambit. Wyatt Russell, Hannah John-Kamen, Danny Ramirez and David Harbour round out the seats.

Even with all those heroes on screen, the PSA is a promotional extra rather than a proper trailer. It is also not evidence that every character listed will have a major role in the finished film.
Not everyone is charmed. The A.V. Club acknowledged the star power but doubted that a polite request would change moviegoer behavior, and it pointed out that such spots only ask people to silence their phones instead of keeping them away entirely. That is a fair point, given that putting superheroes on the big screen practically invites fans to pull out their phones.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ arrives on Dec. 18, and the film reunites heroes from 3 distinct universes to face Doctor Doom. Its runtime is reported at 165 minutes, though that figure was flagged as provisional. It would be longer than ‘Infinity War’ but shorter than ‘Endgame’.
Premium tickets went on sale July 20 and generated $16.5 million on the first day, according to Variety. General sales opened Aug. 14. There will be no IMAX screens in the US for the first 3 weeks, since ‘Dune: Part Three’ holds the format exclusively, so Marvel is leaning on its Infinity Vision brand instead.
For a film with a cast this large, marketing every touchpoint makes sense, even a 20-second phone reminder. The clip also reminds fans that the movie’s biggest selling point is seeing these characters in one place.
Whether it convinces anyone to stop texting during the movie is another question. As a piece of cast-driven fan service, though, it delivers.
