Marvel Confirms Two Different ‘Doomsday’ Sneak Peeks Are Attached to ‘Avengers: Endgame Encore’

Marvel Studios has spent the past few weeks steadily rolling out details about its September rerelease of “Avengers: Endgame,” and the picture has grown more layered with each new announcement. What started as a straightforward nostalgia play has turned into a genuinely tiered theatrical event, with the actual viewing experience now depending heavily on which screen fans choose.

That tiered structure comes down to how Marvel is handling the new footage tied to December’s “Avengers: Doomsday.” Every “Endgame Encore” screening will include an exclusive look at the upcoming film, giving all audiences some form of new material regardless of where they watch. But the studio has now confirmed a second, separate preview exists specifically for premium formats, adding another layer to an already complicated rollout.

According to the official breakdown, that second piece comes as an additional four minutes of footage available in all screenings, while a further exclusive look is reserved specifically for IMAX and Disney’s newly created Infinity Vision-certified theaters. That means moviegoers hoping to see everything Marvel has attached to this rerelease will need to specifically seek out one of those two premium formats rather than settling for a standard screening.

Infinity Vision itself represents something closer to a certification standard than an entirely new projection technology. Disney and Marvel have set specific benchmarks screens must meet to earn the designation, including a minimum width of 45 feet, Dolby 7.1 surround sound, and required brightness levels, giving the studio a consistent premium tier it can market across a wide range of participating theaters nationwide.

The timing behind introducing Infinity Vision now isn’t coincidental. “Avengers: Doomsday” opens December 18 opposite Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Three,” and IMAX has already committed its screens exclusively to Villeneuve’s film for that release window, leaving Marvel without its usual go-to large-format option for its next major tentpole. Rolling out Infinity Vision through “Endgame Encore” gives Disney a low-risk opportunity to build recognition for the new format months ahead of “Doomsday” actually needing it.

As for the runtime itself, “Endgame Encore” clocks in at 185 minutes, four minutes longer than the original 2019 theatrical cut, making it the longest Marvel Studios film released to date. Disney has described the added package at CineEurope as consisting of a custom introduction, additional new footage, and a special end tag, though it remains unclear exactly how the standard four-minute addition and the IMAX/Infinity Vision-exclusive sneak peek overlap or differ from one another.

Co-director Joe Russo has kept specifics about the actual content under wraps, only confirming that the new material is set within the “Doomsday” story and designed to function as a narrative bridge between the two films. That vagueness has left plenty of room for fan speculation, with theories ranging from expanded scenes involving Tony Stark’s legacy to guesses about how the footage might tie into Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected return as Doctor Doom.

“Avengers: Endgame Encore” returns to theaters September 25, with “Avengers: Doomsday” following on December 18. For fans determined to catch every scrap of new footage Marvel has tucked into this rerelease, the theater and format they choose this September will matter more than it typically does for a standard blockbuster rerelease.
